The late Mr Chopra was the chairman of the motion picture production and owned Yash Raj Studios. He was considered as one the best directors. Famously known as “King of Romance” in Bollywood, Yash Raj worked over five decades in Hindi cinema.

Asha, who has regaled music lovers with her melodious voice in her over six decades old career, will receive the Phalke Ratna Award from the academy, while Mala Sinha, who has acted in “Pyaasa”, “Maryada” and “Hariyali Aur Rasta” will get the Golden Era Award.

A special award has been reserved for the late Yash Chopra, who, in his dynamic career, emerged as one of the most iconic filmmakers of the country, offering the best in romance, action and even social dramas.

The ‘First Superstar of Indian Cinema’ award has been rightfully reserved for Rajesh Khanna, whose death in July 2012 left his millions of fans mourning across the country.

His estranged wife, actress Dimple Kapadia will receive the Phalke Ever Memorable Award, while their son-in-law Akshay Kumar will be given the best performance award for “Rowdy Rathore”. Akshay is married to Rajesh-Dimple’s elder daughter Twinkle.

As many as 40 honours will be presented to people from various fields at the event, Prabhat Pandey, secretary of Dadasaheb Phalke Academy, told IANS.

A statue of Dadasaheb Phalke, who made the country’s first silent film “Raja Harishchandra” a century back, will be unveiled at the event. The statue will later be placed at the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagri, better known as Mumbai’s Film City.

Former Indian president Pratibha Patil will be the chief guest for the event.

Yash Chopra definitely stands tall among the legends of Indian cinema. This great man weaved together some of the greatest talents in the film industry, marvelling us with his stories and characters. He redefined romance and drama in the most entertaining manner. From directing Ashok Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan and Mala Sinha to Anushka Sharma, Yash Chopra created over five-decades of glorious cinematic journey.

Yash Chopra started his career with socially related films like ‘Dhool Ka Phool’, ‘Dharmputra’ and ‘Waqt’. In his 53 year long career, he directed 22 films that included romantic hits such as “Daag”, “Kabhi Kabhie”, “Chandni”, “Silsila” and “Lamhe”. His cross-border films like ‘Veer Zara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan ‘ and new age romance like “Dil Toh Pagal Hai” was a super hit among the Gen Y. His every movie reaped gold at the box office.  The legend had an absolute command over his art and craft. The special features about his romantic films were, his lovers were never weak-hearted, men could easily be manly without being violent and women could ooze oomph, charm and sexiness without being vulgar. Chopra’s romances always saw the Swiss Alps & Chiffon Saris. So much was his love for Switzerland that a lake in the Alpenrausch, his favorite shooting spot, has been christened ‘Chopra Lake’.

Today, Bollywood is definitely a big brand abroad, all thanks to Yash Chopra. What Pandit Ravi Shankar did to Indian classical music abroad, Yashji did to Bollywood.

The epitome of romance passed away on 21 October, 2012, following a multiple organ failure. This news shook the whole nation, especially the Bollywood fraternity.

The Indian prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh said, “He had an aesthetic talent to make his films look larger than life. His flourish in essaying romance and social drama was unmatched”

Sayd Dilip Kumar, Yashji’s very close pal said, “Shattering, hard to accept. Yash was more than a friend, a brother. I am numb and have no words to express my grief.”

The festival will start with the movie “Raja Harishchandra’ which was the first ever Bollywood movie released in 1913 and end with the premier of Australian movie ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012)’.

Louise Asher, who is Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business in Australian state of Victoria, spoke to the media last night saying “The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is a wonderful demonstration of our growing cultural links and shows the creativity and innovation that Melbourne and Mumbai are both famous for.”

Vidya Balan, who is all excited after chosen as the bran ambassador for the second time, said “It gives me great pleasure to be the brand ambassador for the second time in a row. It has become like a sense of ownership now not just with the festival but also with the place. When anyone mentions Melbourne I feel like they are mentioning home.”

“I used to feel the same about Kolkata and it will always remain special to me. After Kolkata the other important place for me is Melbourne. The common thing between the two places is trams,” she added.

Legandary film maker Late Yash Chopra will be honored in the festival and his last movie ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ will be screened which starts Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

Shahrukh Khan said: “I am not feeling sad that Yash Chopra is not between us. I am not feeling his absence. He has not gone and still amidst us. He is there somewhere in the air somewhere surrounding us like oxygen. I miss him the most when I see him on Television or when I see his name in my mobile phone and feel like dialing.”

“I feel fortunate to have worked with him. I feel happy when people talk about his body of work. His work will be ever remembered for another 500 years. I think it’s an overwhelming feeling as there are so many good memories about Yashji to be talked about. He has touched the lives with his good work,” he adds on, “Yashji always wanted, through his films, to be able to spread happiness and not anything otherwise. Jab bhi maine unse baat ki unhohne yehi bola ki badi khushi hui ki logon ko khushi hui film dekhke. There were different subjects – thrillers, romantic subjects, social dramas, action films, but one thing that stood common was that people should be happy. That’s why he always chose Diwali (the festival of light & happiness) or, perhaps, Diwali chose him as the day. Most of his films came out on Diwali. So we come here to celebrate his cinema, his work, his life, his 50 years of dedication to the industry and happiness through JAB TAK HAI JAAN.” He added.

He also spoke about how he wishes that Jab Tak Hai Jaan should be a life time experience for all his fans and all the people who watch the film.

“I hope JAB TAK HAI JAAN should be a life time experience when it releases. Inshallah! we all will experience that legacy of happiness that Yashji carried with his films,” He said.

“Every other person has this misnomer that during the film release or making the film Yashji used to discuss a lot about films. Surprising as it may sound but the least topic to be discussed with Yashji used to be films. On the contrary we used talk about life; there were many instances of my parents which I used to relate with him. Similarly, he could relate the instances of his sons – Adi & Uday with me. My relationship with Yashji was beyond films and more than that. We never really sat down strategizing about film or talked about the film’s marketing. For him films were whatever he felt around he tried to convey through celluloid,”

While taking about Yashji he even jokingly hinted how much supremacy he could enjoy under Yash Chopra’s presence at the press meet, which was also attended by leading ladies Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

Finally, SRK finally ended talking about the even and how important it was for all three, including Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, to be present at the press meet of the film. He said: “This is a big event as all three of us have come together for the first time on same platform to talk about the film. As a matter of fact jab tak Yashji the mere bahut chalti thi ab toh maine inko (Katrina and Anushka) ko chuppa ke rakha tha so that I steal all the limelight for this film. Lekin ab who nahi rahe in ladkiyon ki chal rahi hai.”

Jab Tak Hai Jaan will release on November 13.

Yash Chopra’s upcoming film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, featuring Shahrukh Khan, yet again, was supposed to have a romantic number shot in the Swiss Alps, with Katring Kaif donning a white chiffon sari. However, now that the legend is no more with the JTHJ team, the song has been dropped out.

Fact: Not many know that the title ‘Darr’ had been borrowed by the Chopras from Hrithik. Back then, Hrithik had made an amateur film by the same name.

Back to Switzerland, a source has been quoted as saying to a daily, “It’s quite uncanny that Oct 21 was supposed to be Yash Chopra’s last day at a film shoot (he was to be part of a special song for Jab Tak Hai Jaan). But since he passed away sadly, the Swiss government organised a special event in a train named after Yashji.”

Adds the source, “Hrithik and his entire family along with the ‘Krrish 3′ crew lit candles in front of the train.”

It is also heard that the actor cancelled his mother birthday celebrations. “The plan was to celebrate Pinkyji’s birthday in Switzerland with a small private party. In fact, the entire family including Hrithik’s wife Sussanne and sister Sunaina were in Switzerland for the party,” says an insider.

A romantic drama produced by Yash Chopra and Mani Ratnam, star Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi. The film revolves around two impulsive kids who fall in love against the odds and have no idea what they’re getting into.

Veer-Zaara (2004)

A romantic film directed by Yash Chopra. The movie stars Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji in the leading roles. The film won several awards in major film award ceremonies, including the Most Popular Film award at the National Film Awards and the Best Movie award at the annual Filmfare Awards, among others. This film marked the return to directing for Yash Chopra after seven years, last directing the film Dil To Pagal Hai.

Hum Tum (2004)

A romantic comedy flick produced by Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. The movie stars Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. It won several Filmfare Awards. Saif Ali Khan won the National Film Award for Best Actor.

Having being infected with dengue fever, he was admitted to Lilavati hospital last week. Doctors did say his condition was improving and that he would be discharged soon. However, few days ago, Chopra was shifted to the ICU, where he then succumbed to multiple organ failure and was pronounced dead.

On his birthday, 27 Sept, Chopra had announced his retirement from directing. The filmmaker was looking forward to the release of his upcoming romantic movie ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ which stars Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead. It is set to release on November 13.

Reports had it that, Chopra had to cancel his trip to the Swiss Alps, for the filming of the last song in JTHJ, following his illness.

The entire film industry is deeply shocked and grieved by the legends death. Several stars rushed to the hospital and even the Yash Raj studios to pay their last respects to him, among which there were super stars such as Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan.

Others spotted were Priyanka Chopra, Gauri Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Kapoor, Jimmy Shergill, Ramesh Sippy, Dimple Kapadia, Prasoon Joshi, Saira Banu, Anil Kapoor, Parmeet Sethi and Poonam Dhillon.

Shahrukh Khan wrote on Twitter: “Whenever my loved ones depart…ı feel a part of me extinguishes itself with them. Will there come a day….. .that I will no longer have a bit of myself to let go of? And then the thought follows…that every time they have taken some of me….. with them onto theır last journey , I have found a fragment of them left inside me too…I will always have some love to give…. and I will always be both emptied and replenished by the loved ones I lose. I keep u wıth me Yashjı and I mıss u too Yashjı…lots.”

Dilip Kumar posted: “Shattering, hard to accept. Yash was more than a friend, a brother. I am numb and have no words to express my grief.”

Yash Chopra is survived by wife Pamela and two sons, filmmaker Aditya Chopra and actor-producer Uday Chopra.
