He says every film is different. For instance, his “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum”, produced by Ekta Kapoor, was a sex comedy and he feels that critics shouldn’t have compared it with a family entertainer.

“I had a bad press for ‘Kyaa Kool…’ I don’t know what all names I was called. My only point was that Ekta and I were clear that we are making a sex comedy and not a ‘Ramayan’. It was not a family entertainer. If you as a critic don’t like sex comedy, then don’t review it,” he told IANS.

“You have to go and see a film keeping in mind for whom the film is meant. You can’t put your sensibilities into that,” he said.

His next is family entertainer “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″ starring the Deol clan – Dharmendra and his two sons Sunny and Bobby Deol. Neha Sharma and Kristi Akheeva also feature in it.

The director calls it an “over-the-top comedy” and suggests that reviewers, who don’t appreciate such cinema, should not watch it.

“If you are a reviewer or a critic who doesn’t like over-the-top films then don’t review it. You will put your sensibilities into it and it is not meant for you,” he said.

Sivan added that the film caters to the masses.

“When the target audience is niche, it’s easier. But a commercial masala film has a much larger audience. This audience is not the critics… I am making the film for all the people in India,” said the director who earlier went behind the camera for “Apna Sapna Money Money” and “Ek – The Power of One”, among others.

Sunny and his brother Bobby were launched by their actor father Dharmendra with “Betaab” and “Barsaat”, respectively. Both the films were made under their banner Vijayta Films. Later the He Man of the 1960s launched his nephew Abhay too with “Socha Na Tha”.

“I might direct my son as well… not now at least,” said Sunny, who is currently busy promoting their home production “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″, in which his son has worked as an assistant director.

Sunny wants to follow the family tradition and added: “We will launch him like I was launched, my brother was launched. I am basically giving him space because at the end of the day, it is his journey. Parents can only be there to put you there, but after that it’s an individual journey.”

Asked when he plans to launch Karan, 21, Sunny said: “May be in a year’s time. I would give him a year. I would want him to grasp as much knowledge as possible. To me, an actor has to be like a sponge.”

After the 1999 release “Dillagi”, starring him along with his brother Bobby and actress Urmila Matondkar, the 56-year-old stayed away from direction, but has definite plans to wield the megaphone in the near future.

Explaining his decision, Sunny said: “Of late, I have not been doing too many films. I have realised that it’s very important to be seen around. Definitely, I want to do loads of films so that my fans can see me often. I am here only because of them.

“At the moment, I will act for next couple of years. I want to take it a little easy and then I want to get into direction, but I will definitely direct,” he added.

Right now he his looking forward to the release of “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″, a sequel to the 2011 hit comedy “Yamla Pagla Deewana”. Coming June 7, it also stars Dharmendra and Bobby, who were in the original too.

He also has “Singh Saab The Great” and “Mohalla Assi” in the pipeline.

A sequel to 2011 hit comedy “Yamla Pagla Deewana”, “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″ stars Dharmendra and his two sons – Sunny and Bobby.

“I was working on a film with Dharamji and Bobby called ‘Cheers’. Then I was asked to do this (‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2′). I would like to have a re-look at that film,” Sivan told IANS.

The director would like to revisit “Cheers” script and said that he will “add some new elements in it as it has been two years since we wrote it…If it still inspires all of us, then we will start that immediately”.

Talking about the story of the film, he said that it’s based on father-son relationship. “It is about a road trip, which the father and son undertake,” he added.

Meanwhile, he is eagerly waiting for the release of “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″, coming June 7.

“I never dreamt that I will come and make a Hindi film. I was attracted to it as it gives you a far bigger scope,” said Sivan who entered Hindi films with Sunny Deol-starrer 1997 movie “Zor”.

“Due to my small market in Malayalam cinema, I had a very small budget to try out new things. Hindi cinema always was a space where there was much more money involved,” he added.

Talking about the difference between the two industries, Sivan said the southern industry demands discipline as budgets there are low.

“In the southern industry, just because you have a smaller area from where the money comes, the budget has to be lower, so discipline has to be more. Everything is accounted for. You have to finish the film in 40 days. Once you start, you know you have to release in three months,” he said.

“Here, you have much more time to shoot, see the rough cut and still have time to promote and all,” said Sivan, who has directed films like “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum”, “Apna Sapna Money Money” and “Ek – The Power of One” in Bollywood.

Another difference, he pointed out, is that down south technicians command the same respect that the actors get.

“Here (Bollywood) the technicians don’t have the same kind of position. But in south, director, editor and all (technicians) are as highly respected as the actor. It is also happening here, but it is still hero-dominated,” he said.

His next Hindi release is fun-filled “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2″, which stars Dharmendra and his two sons – Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.

Slated to release June 7, it has Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva in the female lead roles.
