Tabu

Tabu was born as Tabassum Hashmi on 4 November 1971 in Hyderabad to Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana. She mainly acted in Hindi films but also starred in numerous Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali language films.

Tabu made her debut as a leading lady in Bollywood with Pehla Pehla Pyar which went un-noticed however her major breakthrough was with her role in Vijaypath in 1994 opposite Ajay Devgan for which she received the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. Tabu appeared in many low budget movies which did not do well at the box office but were critically acclaimed. In 1996 Tabu had eight releases of which only two movies were commercially successful, Saajan Chale Sasural and Jeet.

Her movies which did not perform at the box office but gained critical acclaim and rave reviews include Maachis, Thakshak, Astitva and Maqbool. Her debut in Hollywood was with the Namesake which was a hit overseas. Her most recent movies include, Life of Pi.
