Shilpa Shetty was born 8 June 1975 in Mangalore, Karnataka. She started her career by modelling for a Limca commercial in 1991 at age 16. Shilpa has appeared in nearly 40 Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films.
She made her Bollywood debut in the film Baazigar in 1993, but her first leading role was in the film Aag, 1994 which under performed at the box office. She acted in a blockbuster the same year, Main Khiladi Tu Anari opposite Akshay Kumar. After a series of flops, Shilpa acted in Pardesi Babu, 1998 for which she received critical acclaim and won the Bollywood Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2000, Shilpa Shetty received much acclaim for her role in Dhadkan which was a moderate hit at the box office.
Shilpa’s performance in Phir Milenge took her career on top. She portrayed the role of a successful woman who contracts HIV from unprotected sex and becomes a social outcast as a result. The movie was a commercial success and Shilpa donated all her earnings from that movie to an AIDS charity. In 2007 Shilpa appeared in Life in a… Metro, and her performance won her much recognition.
She was a contestant and the winner of Celebrity Big Brother UK and was the first Indian celebrity included in the Celebrity version. In February 2009 Shilpa and her husband Raj Kundra became part owners of the Indian Premier League franchise cricket team Rajasthan Royals. Shilpa Shetty’s younger sister Shamita Shetty is also a Bollywood actress. They worked together once in the film Fareb in 2005.
