It has been one week since the actor surrendered himself in Mumbai, marking the start of his 42-month jail term. He was convicted for illegal possession of arms during the Mumbai riots of 1992-93. The reason for shifting him to Pune’s jail is not known yet.

The actor finished work on a few projects before the start of his sentence and so, we would still see him on the screen for a while. But, the actor will remain unavailable for any promotional events of his films. However, we’re sure that he’ll miss his twin babies more than anything else!

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt left to jail to complete the remaining three-and-a-half years of his sentence for possessing illegal weapons which were linked to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

He surrendered in a TADA court in Mumbai and spent the night in the Arthur Road jail. He will be moved to Pune’s Yerawada Jail to begin the 42 months left of the five-year jail term he was handed by the Supreme Court.

He was found guilty of possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol after the 1993 Mumbai serial blast. He later insisted that he was in possession of those weapons for the safety of his family.

Earlier in a news conference Sanjay Dutt broke into tears and declared himself “a shattered man”.

A lot of big names from the film fraternity were there to show their support and solidarity towards ‘Munnabhai’, who has been convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of arms.

There were early morning prayers and celebrity visitors at Sanjay’s Bandra home, outside which stood hordes of fans, as the 53-year-old prepared to return to the prison in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Dressed in a white kurta, with cropped hair and a tilak on his forehead, he waved at the media and fans before walking hand-in-hand with his wife Manyata towards his car.

Sanjay started the day with solemn prayers and a ‘havan’ conducted by a priest with his family members participating in the ceremonies, according to sources.

Since Wednesday night, Sanjay has been getting calls and visits from friends, colleagues and well wishers, sources said. Prominent among them were actors Salman Khan, Fardeen Khan and director David Dhawan with whom he has always shared a special rapport. Also there were Vashu Bhagnani, Rajkumar Hirani, Apoorva Lakhia, Raj Kundra, Bunty Walia, Bhushan Kumar and Sophie Choudry.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court declined Sanjay’s plea for additional time to surrender to serve his remaining three-and-half years’ sentence for his role in the case. The actor has already served 18 months in prison.

Sanjay will surrender before a special TADA court later Thursday after the apex court upheld his conviction, but reduced the six-year jail term to five.

According to Bollywood circles, Bollywood’s ‘Munnabhai’ has resigned himself to serving the remaining tenure of his sentence and returning to jail without creating more controversies.

After completing the surrender formalities, he will be whisked off to the high-security Arthur Road Central Jail – which usually houses undertrials – in congested south-central Mumbai.

Finally, he will be shifted to another regular jail either in Pune, Nashik or Nagpur. Police officials were tight-lipped about the final destination.

The popular 53-year-old actor must surrender to authorities after India’s top court dismissed a last-ditch plea for more time earlier this week.

Dutt was convicted in 2006 of possessing guns supplied by gangsters behind the 1993 bomb attacks that killed 257 people, but he was freed on bail after serving 18 months in prison.

In March this year the Supreme Court upheld Dutt’s conviction but cut his jail term from six years to five.

A bench of the court on Tuesday refused to hear a plea of a film producer who sought more time for Dutt to surrender so he could complete two films that are still being shot.

Analysts estimate about 2.5 billion rupees ($45 million) are riding in Bollywood on the muscular star, who is best known for playing a mobster with a heart of gold in the “Munnabhai” series.

On Wednesday, Dutt withdrew another plea to give himself up in a different city, which he had made citing threats to his life.

Officials said Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail had received an anonymous death threat targeting the actor, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

“We have taken cognisance of the letter received three days ago and shall be providing adequate security to Sanjay Dutt,” said a top officer of the jail, where he may be taken initially.

A string of Bollywood names visited Dutt’s home in the trendy Bandra suburb on his last day of freedom, while a Hindu rightwing group also protested outside to demand he go to jail without any VIP treatment, reports said.

On Thursday morning, media gathered outside the residence amid a heavy police presence, as well as at the court in south Mumbai where Dutt must turn himself in.

The actor, whose parents were two of India’s biggest stars, shot to fame in the 1980s in a string of action movies in which he performed his own stunts, earning him the nickname “Deadly Dutt”.

The father-of-three, whose mother was Muslim and father Hindu, was acquitted in 2007 of more serious charges of conspiracy in the deadly blasts, which also wounded more than 700 people.

The attacks were seen as retaliation for religious riots in which mainly Muslims died after the razing of an old mosque at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh state.

Dutt was found guilty of possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol, which he insisted were only meant to protect his family amid the tense atmosphere in Mumbai following the mosque’s destruction.

At a news conference following the hearing in March, Dutt wept as he declared himself “a shattered man” and some prominent figures have called for him to be pardoned.

Sanjay, convicted for his role in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts will now surrender before a Mumbai TADA Special Court by 4 p.m. Thursday.

The reason behind the abrupt move is not yet known.

Apprehending death threats from some fundamentalist groups, which he did not identify, if he gave himself up in Mumbai, Sanjay Tuesday moved an application before TADA Special Judge G.A. Sanap seeking permission to surrender in Pune’s high security Yerwada Jail.

Special Judge Sanap had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to file its reply in the matter and had posted the matter for hearing Wednesday.

“The applicant is facing threats to life from fundamentalist groups and those with vested interests,” Sanjay’s application stated.

He further claimed that he wanted to avoid a chase by the media like in the past. “The media vehicles chased the applicant’s vehicles for 120 kms in the past.”

However, in an anti-climax, Wednesday Sanjay suddenly withdrew the application.

“I am not aware of the reasons why he has withdrawn the application,” Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said.

Sanjay is due to surrender Thursday (May 16) after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction under the Arms Act, though it reduced the six-year jail term to five.

He filed the application Tuesday after the Supreme Court declined additional time to the actor to serve the remainder three-and-half years’ sentence awarded in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
