Naseeruddin Shah was born on 20 July 1950 in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh to an army officer. After graduating from Aligarh Muslim University, he joined National School of Drama and has ever since been a successful actor in mainstream Bollywood cinema as well as in Parallel Cinema.
He made his debut as an actor in Nishant and went on to appear in various movies like Sparsh, Katha, Satya, Ardh, Junoon, Mandi, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! He is known for his unorthodox portrayals in movies like Hey Ram, Iqbal, A Wednesday, Maqbool, Aasambhav, Ishqiya, Khuda Ke Liye and The Dirty Picture.
He has also appeared in Hollywood movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentleman alongside Sean Connery and The Great New Wonderful. As a director, his theatre troupe performed in places like New Delhi, Mumbai, Banglore and Lahore and made is directorial debut in Bollywood with Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota in 2006 starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Irrfan Khan.
Naseeruddin Shah married Manara Sikri and has a daughter, Heeba Shah. After the death of Manara he married Bollywood actress Ratna Patak Shah in 1982 and has two sons, Imaad and Vivaan.
