It was a star studded affair at the screening of Bombay Talkies, with prominent Bollywood biggies, including veteran writer Javed Akhtar and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap were in full attendance.

Held at the Light Box in Santacruz, Mumbai, the event also saw celebrities like Ranveer Singh, Randeep Hooda, Gauri Shinde, Punit Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Sonam Kapoor, Ritesh Sidwani and Kalki Koechlin.

Directed by four directors, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibaker Banerjee, Bombay Talkies is a compilation of four short films, with Rani Mukherjee doing Karan’s part, Katrina kaif has been roped in for Zoya’s story, Superstar Amitabh Bachchan will be playing himself in Anurag Kashyap’s short story and Dibaker Banerjee’s story will see Ranbir Kapoor, who appears in every frame of the movie.

20 singers have come together to lend their voices for the anthem of the movie and has been choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. The music in this movie is given by Amit Trivedi and Lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya & Swanand Kirkire. Bombay Talkies releases on May 3.

Portrayals of sex, nudity, social unrest and violence can still be kept out of movie halls under India’s strict laws that were first drafted in 1952 and later amended in 1983.

In the year of Bollywood’s 100-year anniversary, “Cut-Uncut” is being organised by the ministry of information and broadcasting to demonstrate its more open-minded approach, a ministry official said.

“We want to be more liberal, stop enforcing the old rules and instead recognise artistic endeavor,” said an official in the ministry, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.

Until recently, “long kissing scenes, nudity and visuals depicting acts of rebellion against the government” were all censored, he explained.

“With changing times, we want to have a fresh approach. Our aim is to change the old set of censor laws soon.”

The festival beginning April 25 will open with a screening of the 1933 classic “Karma” starring Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani, whose onscreen kiss was considered the first in a Bollywood film and was deleted at the time.

A 2004 documentary called the Final Solution, which looks at the highly sensitive subject of Hindu-Muslim religious rioting, will also be shown after it was banned for being “highly provocative.”

These days Bollywood is awash with sexually suggestive material and scantily-clad leading ladies, but sex remains a taboo and films showing kissing scenes are given an “adult” certificate limiting them to viewers over 18.

The most popular films remain so-called “masala movies”, a mix of violence, romance and comedy for mainstream audiences, but there are more and more filmmakers working to reproduce the gritty reality of India on celluloid.

Star director Dibakar Banerjee ran into trouble last year with the censor board over his film “Shanghai”.

He had to delete two scenes depicting violence in the political thriller, including a high-caste character murdering a low-caste victim.

“I hated the idea of deleting the most powerful scenes from my movie but, well, I had to chop them otherwise the movie would have never seen the light of day,” he said.

“Censorship has the power to kill the spirit of a film. It’s high time the government stops dictating what Indians should be watching,” he added.

“I dont think I have the knowledge of technicality. But certainly in future, I would direct for theatre, but I am not looking to turn director for commercial films. I don’t see myself directing films,” Kalki told IANS.

“Theatre is something I enjoy the most, so certainly I will direct for it, but I don’t know when. Let’s see how things fall in place,” she added.

The Indian actress of French descent has studied theatre in the past, and she even featured in several plays before foraying into filmdom.

Her latest Bollywood film is “Ek Thi Daayan”, which hit the screens Friday.

At a time when Bollywood is witnessing remake after remake, the actress says she would like to be part of remakes of movies like “Pyaasa” or “Mirch Masala”.

“When I joined this industry, I watched so many Hindi films. When I learnt about Hindi films, I really started liking them. I would like to be part of remakes of films like ‘Pyaasa’ and ‘Mirch Masala’,” she said.

Story :

The story of Ek Thi Daayan revolves around folk tales about witches and their witch craft. Emraan Hashmi plays the role of Bobo, best magician in India. Just when he plans to settle down, he is confronted with his old past. He uses hypnosis to find out details of his past where he finds out that a witch who he had killed promised to take him. After so many years he feels that his past has come back to haunt him and cause harm to his family. How he protects them and how he kills the daayan is the remaining par of the story.

Performances :

Ek Thi Daayan stars Emraan Hashmi, Huma Qureshi, Kalki Koechlin and Konkana Sen. Emraan Hashmi who has carried off dark roles easily in his previous films, plays the role of a magician with the same ease. He plays the role of a top magician Bobo. He gives a very mature performance in this film and carries the whole film on his shoulders really well. All the female leads plays their part to perfection. But Konkana as a veteran does the best job out of them. Huma and Kalki fail to do better than Konkana. The best part was played by Vishesh Tiwari who played child version of Emraan Hashmi. The innocence that he bring to role adds a bigger advantage. Sara Arjun who plays Emraan’s sister is very cute.

Technical aspect : 

Kannan Iyer brings a gem with the story with ‘Ek Thi Daayan’. The story is based on a short story by Mukul Sharma. Mukul Sharma was assisted by Vishal Bharadwaj on the story and the screenplay. The movie concentrated on the minutest of details. The screenplay of the movie is good but only in parts. The movie lacks a befitting end to this supernatural thriller.  Cinematography is very important for a horror movie. Saurabh Goswami does a wonderful job in it. The movie manages to evoke more spine chilling sequences than expected. Both background music and songs are enjoyable in this movie. Vishal Bharadwaj music and Gulzar’s lyrics are a perfect combination, they manage to create most beautiful songs.

Analysis :

Kannan Iyer has definitely bought back element ‘Daayan’ that has existed in hindi horror movies. With a fresh script, melodious tunes and an awesome performances put up by the cast of Ek Thi Daayan makes this movie very watchable. The film has shrills, thrills, Emraan’s lip lock and of course Daayans, everything that you are expecting from this movie. But the thing that spoils everything is the screenplay and how the movie ends. The first half of the movie is very engaging. It’s mostly the flashback of emraan and is so beautifully directed that the second half doesn’t seem to be directed by Kannan. The ending is so bad that you find it funny (It shows the actors are involved in fist fight ). It follows a long list of hindi horror movies whose endings fall flat to the build up it generates in the first half. Nevertheless, must watch movie for the first half performances and picturisation.

Bottomline : Ek Thi Daayan is full of Chills, Thrills But Ending Spills

Vishal has already proven his worth as a music director who can compose for dark films with 7 Khoon Maaf and his other movies. Ek Thi Daayan album has 5 songs in it.

Yaaram

This song was used as the first one to promote the film and it lives up to the name. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Clinton Cerejo, this is a soothing song. Its starts of as a slow number but gains momentum slowly and becomes a foot tapping number.

Totey Udd Gaye

Totey Udd Gaye is a song that you use in weddings. Its fun song, sung by Suresh Wadkar, Sukhwinder Singh and Rekha Bhardwaj. Its a peppy yet its got a rustic touch to it. The punjabi dhols add to the song. Definitely an addictive song.

Kaali Kaali

Clinton Cerejo holds the mike again for the next song Kaali Kaali. It is a very dark and romantic song. The low tones of the song give a creepy touch to it. It is a good song as the voice and music is too low. The best thing of this song is its lyrics, Hats of to Gulzar saab for writing this.

Lautungi Mein

Lautungi Mein has Rekha Bharadwaj behind the mike. This song gives the perfect feeling of a horror movie.Along with Rekha’s raw and rustic voice, it has elements like ghunghroos, howling wolves and sound of crickets just like old horror movies which make the song more scary and eerie in nature. Kudos to Vishal for such a tune.

Sapna re Sapna

It is a lullaby song sung by Padmanabh Gaikwad who came in Lil Champs. His innocence and the high music gives a different feel to the song. It is not the best song of the album but a situational one which might suit the scene more.

Overall, Ek Thi Daayan is a good album, certainly not the best of Vishal Bharadwaj’s work though. Yaaram, Totey Udd gaye and Lautungi Main are my pick of songs from this movie. Ek Thi Daayan is releasing on this Friday, 19th April.

Bobo is India’s renowned magician, who suffers from constant hallucinations, leaving him with no option but to seek psychiatric help. His girlfriend Tamara is not aware of his consistent hallucinations. Bobo’s past life is deciphered through regression hypnosis. His horrid past surfaces a daayan, who destroyed his family and swore to return into his life to haunt him.

Ignoring the fact, Bobo continues with his life, till Lisa Dutt enters.  Bobo is convinced that Lisa is the daayan. While Konkona Sen plays the Lisa Dutt of 1960, Kalki Koechlin is the Lisa Dutt of 2013.

The film’s haunting music is by Vishal Bhardwaj, with lyrics by Gulzar.
