Kajol Devgn was born on born 5 August 1974 to Bollywood actress Tanuja and film director Shomu Mukherjee. Believed to be extremely naughty as a child, Kajol started her career as an actress while she was still in school.
Making her debut with Bekhudi in 1992 at the age of 18, Kajol later quit education to concentrate on movies. In 1993 Kajol did a thriller movie, Baazigar along with Shahrukh Khan, which was her first commercial success. Her performance in Yash Raj’s Yeh Dillagi won her, her first nomination for Filmfare’s Best Actress. Starring in two commercial as well as box office hits like Karan Arjun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Leyenge in 1995, Kajol made her mark in Bollywood. In both the movies she was paired opposite Shahrukh Khan, and it was the start of one of the best pairings Bollywood had ever seen. Dilwale Dulhaniya Leyenge won Kajol her first Filmfare award in the Best Actress category. Her acting skills came to a test in movies like Dushman and she won accolades from the critics for her performance. In the late nineties, with movies like Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Duplicate, Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dil Kya Kare, Kajol won a lot of audience. In 2000 she started in Ajay Devgn’s home production’s movie Raju Chacha. In 2001 after Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham, Kajol took a break from Bollywood, to concentrate on her marriage and to start a family.
Kajol returned to Bollywood with Fanaa, which also starred Aamir Khan, and once again won a Filmfare award for Best Actress. She later had cameos in movies like Om Shanti Om, Haal-e-dil and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Kajol again appeared as Mandira Khan in Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan which was a huge blockbuster in India and overseas. She again won the Filmfare award for Best Actress. Kajol has so far received 6 Filmfare awards and has been nominated over 11 times. She also was honoured with Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2011
Kajol is married to actor Ajay Devgn and has two children, daughter Nysa and son Yug.
