“Gulaab Gang”, directed by Soumik Sen, is loosely based on Uttar Pradesh-based social activist Sampat Pal and her Gulabi Gang, which works towards liberation of women in the state.

Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, who play pivotal roles in the film, ‘believe’ their work should inspire audiences.

“As a creative artist, my job has been to inspire audiences with art and films I’m part of. And the campaign allows me to present before you stories that are inspiring for us all. I look forward to saluting the unknown heroines of the country,” Madhuri said in a statement.

An initiative by Benaras Mediaworks in association with “Gulaab Gang”, the campaign will bring forth stories of valour from across the country and talk about unheard stories and unsung heroines.

The campaign will invite entries of women across the country who have battled odds and emerged victorious. The entries will be analysed by a panel of eminent personalities from varied walks of life, who will select 20 stories of inspiration that the nation must hear of. These inspiring stories will be adapted into short films.

Juhi Chawla said: “BELIEVE ties in beautifully with the theme of the film – in life too, women managing homes, families and careers, face challenges and discrimination everyday.

“It’s always inspiring and uplifting to know a real story of real women who have overcome hardships, extreme hardships and come out as winners.”

Producer Anubhav Sinha says that “Gulaab Gang” is an attempt “to inspire women to fight for their freedom from social injustice or stigma.”

“Women continue to be oppressed, marginalised, and violated every single day. However, despite adverse climes that women in this nation are subject to, we see shining examples of some who have blazed the trail and against all odds have emerged victorious to show us that the term ‘weaker sex’ is an absolute mistake,” said Sinha.

“Being a woman, you always go through something or the other. When I made my debut in Bollywood, many people told me I can’t do, it’s not a good place, I can’t make my position in this industry. But that time I had faith in myself and worked and proved everyone what can I do,” Madhuri said at the event. “When you push yourself you rise up to the challenge and you realise your strength. When adversity comes that’s when one stands for themselves,” she added.

Madhuri Dixit Nene had made her Bollywood debut with Abodh in 1984. The film did not enjoy commercial success. She delivered flops consecutively after that and did not taste success at the box-office until 1988, when, she finally experienced stardom with Tezaab. It was that year’s highest grossing movie. She had carved a niche for herself by then and, was delivering hits after hits. However, she decided to settle down when she was still at the peak of her career. She married an NRI surgeon, Shriram Nene and migrated to the United States of America!

Post marriage, she worked in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas in the year 2002. She had been away from films until 2007, when she made her comeback with Aditya Chopra’s home production Aaja Nachle but, the film wasn’t much successful. Nevertheless, she kept herself busy with television and she was one of the judges on a reality television show called Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

Currently, Madhuri is working on Gulab Gang which is Soumik Sen’s directorial debut. The movie will also feature Juhi Chawla, Mahie Gill, Shilpa Shukla and others. This film is sure to bring back memories of the 90s!

Story :

Dev Goel and Adah Sharma are two friends who plan a trip to Goa in car on the New Year’s eve. The journey what they expect would take 2 hours, turns out to be an overnight one. While en route to Goa, both of them go through some series of funny and bizarre incidents.

Artist Performances :

Movie majorly revolves around Dev and Adah. This is Dev Goel’s debut movie, he was decent with his comic timing and did a fairly good job. Even Adah sharma did not have a challenging role to play, she was average as well. Rest of the cast was forgettable.Actors like Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher and Juhi Chawla were wasted.

Technical Aspects :

Cinematography of the movie was poor, it was shaky and not at all up to the A-list standards. Director tried to make use of special effects, but they were hilarious and not at all convincing. Even editing went places, with lot of blank reels in the middle. On the whole, Hum Raahi Car ke is technically very poor.

Analysis :

Movie starts off decently with each character defined well. First half hour of the movie goes on with decent comedy, where it does provide some laughs. Latter part of second half was dragged a bit. 2nd half is where the movie goes haywire, with some hopeless scenes and lame jokes. And the climax just adds up to the misery of the viewers, which is absolutely boring and predictable.

On the whole, Hum Hai Raahi car Ke has nothing novel to offer in terms of story-line and the poor execution makes it absolutely exasperating to watch. It has disaster written all over it.

Bottom-Line : Watch it at your own risk!

In an recent interview he said, “It is not based on anybody’s life, it’s a fiction. Yes, there are some similarities like it has a women’s gang and the pink colour but the film is not a documentation of Sampat Pal’s life. A lot of people took it for granted that it’s about the gang but it’s not.”

He further added, “Soumik Sen (director) told me the story while we were in Benaras and I was really impressed with it. Logistically, it was very challenging to put the movie together as it has no male protagonist, and then you have action and dance sequences. Also I knew it would not attract money easily as it is not a usual film. I went through many tough times but ultimately I enjoyed making this movie. ”

Gulaab Gang will see yesteryear rivals, Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit sharing screen space. When questioned about his thoughts on this, he says, “We approached Juhi and she was surprised with what was being offered. She has never been approached with something like this before but it took her just three meetings to say yes. Soumik had already met Madhuri once, before narrating the script to me. So he kind of had her in mind. Again this is something very different for her but she was hands on ready for it.”

His views on being a producer, “I wanted to become a producer for the past 5-6 years. There are many reasons to it… One I feel there is a dearth of producers in our industry. We have people with good scripts but they find it hard to get it financed. It is a challenge to put a good project together and we don’t have enough backing. Also after ‘Ra.One’ I was drained as a director… The movie took five years of my life and I wanted to give myself a break,”

Upon meeting Juhi up, close and personal on the sets of Zee TV’s “India’s Best Dramebaaz”, Vivek couldn’t contain his emotions.

“I had a huge crush on you after watching ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’,” Vivek told Juhi after watching her shake a leg to “Gazab ka hai din” from the same film, which completed 25 years since its release April 29.

Juhi Chawla, however, laughed out loud saying: “You mean you had a crush on me when you were 10 years old?” Vivek is now 36.

“I very clearly remember watching the film as a kid, and had a huge crush on Juhi Chawla’s character. She became the epitome of the woman I aspired to date. Even back then, her vivacious ways and cute smile were so endearing that I think all the boys in India fell in love with her,” said Vivek, who is a judge on the reality show.

The actress was on the show to promote her upcoming film “Hum Hai Rahi Car Ke” along with her co-stars, Dev Goel and Adah Sharma. The trio were amazed by the wholesome talent on the show and were full of praises for all the kids.

The special episode will be aired Sunday.

Post the screening, Aamir and wife Kiran Rao went to Mansoor Khan’s residence for a warm get together.

The movie marked the debut of the director Mansoor Khan and actor Aamir Khan as director and actor respectively. Juhi Chawla was also appreciated for her role in the romantic flick. “Mansoor Khan called just the other day to say we’re going to have a reunion of the film’s cast and crew. And I was like, my god! Is it really 25 years of QSQT? Wow! I feel so young when I say this (laughs),” said Juhi.

“Jokes aside, it is amazing that the film is still so fresh and alive. The songs by Anand-Milind like ‘Ghazab ka yeh din’ and ‘Ae mere humsafar’ are hummed to this day. Sadly, Majrooh Sultanpuri, who wrote the lovely songs is no more. From the film’s team we also lost our wonderful producer Nasir Hussain Saab. And from the cast Goga Kapoor is gone. But most of us are still around to get together for the screening of QSQT that Mansoor Khan organised….”

Juhi was disappointed that she couldn’t get a chance to work with Mansoor Khan again because he made only two movies after QSQT.

“You know QSQT was not really my debut film. I had done ‘Sultanat’ with Sunny Deol before that. But no one remembers me in that film. If you blinked, you missed me in that. Even I’ve forgotten my role in that film. But I do remember I felt intimidated by all the stalwarts in ‘Sultanat’.

“In QSQT, we were all relatively new, therefore, most comfortable working together. There was no stress, no stretched nerves and frayed ego,” said Juhi, who visited Ooty for the first time to shoot for QSQT.

“I’d wake up at 5 a.m. and do makeup to report on location. It was great fun. We all rehearsed together and we knew every line beforehand. I was so inexperienced I didn’t know why we were rehearsing like we were going to do a play (ha ha).”

“I had to speak like a girl from a Rajput dynasty… I had to speak in that ‘Hum yeh karenge, hum woh karenge’ style. That lingo was alien to me. This was Nasir Hussain saab’s idea. I just said the lines… You know, the lines were said differently in QSQT from the way they were said in those days. I remember my team of hairdresser, makeup person, costume designer used to wonder, ‘Yeh log kya banaa rahen hain’. None of us knew how the film would turn out,” said Juhi.
