John Abraham was born on 7 December 1972, to a Malayali father and a Parsi mother. John Abraham modelling career kicked off when he appeared in the music video of the song “Surma” by Punjabi singer Jazzy B. He then joined a media firm ‘Time & Space Media Entertainment Promotions Ltd’, which however, closed because of financial problems. Later, he worked for Enterprises-Nexus as a media planner. In 1999, he won the Gladrags Manhunt Contest and went to the Philippines for Manhunt International, where he won second place. He made his Bollywood debut in 2003 opposite Bipasha Basu in Jism, a thriller film which according to the Indian Box Office, was a super hit. His next three films in the next two years were failures and went without a trace. In 2004, he delivered his biggest hit when he was roped in to play the role of a villain in Yash Chopra’s Dhoom.
In 2005 he starred in the supernatural thriller Kaal and the comedy flick Garam Masala, both of which did well at the box office. Later that year he starred in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’. The film was nominated for the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2006, he starred in four films, out of which two were substantially successful. In 2007 Abraham starred in 3 films which were all produced under big banner production houses, only one film did well. In 2008 and 2009 he starred in Dostana and New York, both did exceptionally well and won him critical acclaims for his roles. John starred in a few more films then, out of which Desi Boyz and Housefull 2 became blockbusters. In 2012 John produced his first film Vicky Donor starring Ayushman Khurrana and Yami Gutham. The movie became the biggest sleeper hit in that year. As of now, John will be seen in Race 2 which releases in Jan 2013 and later in Shootout At Wadala.
