Jaya Bachchan is perhaps one of the most successful Bollywood actresses of her time. The wife of superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri as she was popularly known is an alumnus of the prestigious FTII.
As a teenager, Jaya made her debut in Satyajit Ray’s film Mahanagar in 1963. Thereafter, she took a break and made her onscreen debut as an adult with the film Guddi in 1971. This was followed by many films – Parichay, Upkaar, Piya Ka Ghar, Jawani Diwani, Zanjeer, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke and Bawarchi.
Jaya took a break from films after Sholay. Following this break, she focused on her family life and children. Her last film as a lead actress was Silsila opposite her husband Amitabh Bachchan. In the 80s, she penned the story of the film starring her husband, Shahenshah. Jaya Bachchan starred in many critically acclaimed films such as Khamoshi and Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa to name a few. Jaya Bachchan has received a total of 9 Filmfare awards including one Lifetime Achievement Award and a Special Award for her contribution to cinema industry.
Jaya Bachchan has been praised for supporting her husband even before his career started. She is said to have been a support that kept him grounded. In later years, Jaya took a stint onto politics. She is a member of the Samajwadi Party.
Jaya has two children Shwetha Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek is married to popular Bolywood actress and ex- Miss World, Aishwarya Rai. They have a daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan.
