The award was presented to the dancer and former Rajya Sabha member by P.C. Chandra Group managing director Prashant Chandra at a glittering function in the Science City auditorium here.

Chandra described Hema Malini as one of the greatest and successful actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Resplendent in a saree and a shining neckpiece, the actress said the award is “more special to me as it has been given when Indian cinema is celebrating its centenary”.

Since its inception in 1993, among those given the award are legendary singers Manna De and late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, celebrated lyricist Gulzar, noted writer Mahasweta Devi and famous cricketer Sourav Ganguly.

Nutan, one of the prominent figures of the black and white era, had appeared in more than 70 Hindi films in her career. She died in the year 1991 battling with cancer. She was honored with Filmfare best actress award 6 times. She was also awarded with the Padma Shri by the govt of India.

Madhubala was one of the most influential and talented Bollywood actresses, best known for her films Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Mughal E Azam. She died in the year 1969 after prolonged illness. She was said to be bone with a hole in her heart. Not just in Bollywood, but in Hollywood too Madhubala was a famous figure. She appeared in many American magazines, one of them featuring her in an extensive article with a full page photo.
