Dia Mirza Handrich was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh to a German father and a Bengali mother. Her mother later married Ahmed Mirza. Thus she adopted the surname Mirza. Dia’s career kick-started at the age of 16 years while she was still an under-graduate.
Mirza first came into limelight as the 2nd runner up at Femina Miss India (2002) and the subsequent Miss Asia Pacific title. Then this beauty queen saw Bollywood beckoning and thus she debuted with the movie Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein opposite R. Madhavan. Even though the film did not fare well,this damse managed to grab a few eyes. The gorgeous diva worked on many films from then on – most of which failed to set the box-office on fire. Deewanapan, Tehzaab,Pran Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye, Dum, Stop!, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Naam Gum Jayega, Blackmail, Parineeta, Dus, Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai, Fight Club-Members are few of her successful
films. Though the actress has been continuously admired for her acting prowess, she is yet to give a commercial hit.
The starlet has appeared in various cameos in films like Kyun…! Ho Gaya Na, My Brother Nikhil, Heyy Baby and Om Shanti Om among others. In the year 2011, Dia Mirza took on the role of producer-director with her film Love Breakups Zindagi hitting the screens. Her production house Born Free Entertainment Pvt. Ltd is her combined venture with boyfriend Sahil Sangha and actor Zayed Khan. The motto of the house is to produce films which they believe in.
The actress is a keen social activist and works to spread awareness regarding various issues including HIV, female feticide and she is also an active member of the Spastic Society of India.
