Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 in Punjab. He was born as Dharam Singh Deol to Kishan Singh Deol and Satwant Kaur and has appeared in more than 247 Hindi-language films as of 2013. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema.

Often referred to as the He-Man and Action King of Hindi cinema, Dhermendra started his career in Bollywood with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960 and won the Filmfare New Talent Award. For his movie, Phool Aur Patthar, he got his first nomination in the Filmfare Best Actor category. He went on to deliver a string of hits and was paired with all the leading actresses but his best pairing so far was with Hema Malini. They delivered hits like Raja Jani, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Dost, Sholay, Azaad and The Burning Train.

Apart from his career as an actor, Dharmendra tried his hand at producing movies, in politics and as being a judge for reality shows. In 1983, he set up his production company, Vijayta Films. The first movie, Betaab, launched his elder son Sunny Deol as an actor in Bollywood. In 1990, Vijayta Films’, Ghayal broke all record and won 7 Filmfare awards. He later launched Bobby Deol in Barsaat in 1995 and his nephew Abhay Deol in Socha Na Tha. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 general elections from Bikaner, Rajasthan. He was on the panel of judges for the reality show, India’s Got Talent.

Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur at the age of 19 in 1954. They have four children together, actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and daughters Vijeeta and Ajeeta. He later married Hema Malini and they have two daughters, Ahana Deol and actress, Esha Deol.
