Race:Review
Last year Naqaab was touted as the “most shocking thriller” of the year by Abbas-Mustan but it failed miserably. But this time the duo has let their work speak for them instead of making tall claims and Race clearly stands out. Race is a total Saif and Akshay’s movie: they delivered superb performances.
The story of Race revolves around two stepbrothers Ranvir Singh (SAK) and Rajeev Singh (Akshay). The two brothers compete against each other since childhood, and as the rule goes for every game, Saif always ends up winning whereas Akshay is on the losing side. Shot extensively in South Africa, the movie is about betrayal, greed, intrigue and revenge.
Ranvir the eldest of the two brothers is a cunning businessman who is always hungry for success and owns a ranch named Stallions. He gives tough competition to his competitors and doesn’t forgive people who try to act smart with him. On the other hand Rajiv (Akshay) is a total spoilt-rich-brat who loves wine more than the family horses.
Ranvir falls head-over-heels in love with the fashion catwalk queen Sonia (Bipasha Basu). But then a thriller is incomplete without a love triangle. Ranvir’s beautiful and hot secretary is secretly in love with her, but Ranvir gives a damn to her. As expected (from the trailers) Akshay also falls in love with Bipasha, and promises to mend his ways if Bipasha accepts his marriage proposal. Saif Ali Khan like every Indian elder brother sacrifices his love for his younger bro. But then one of the brothers has evil intentions in mind, a murder is committed, and the evil brother gets to walk away with the insurance claim of whooping hundred million.
Now a murder mystery is incomplete without a detective, and we do have one in Race. Robert D’Costa aka RD (Anil Kapoor), who is always munching fruits along with his sexy dumb bimbette secretary Mini (Sameera Reddy) enters the scene of crime and try to solve the mystery of the murder. The thriller gets its dose of humor with this detective-secretary combo. Although the jokes are dumb the audience are left in splits.
The best things about Race are not one but many: Akshay’s negative performance, Pritam’s rocking music, Stunts by Allan Amin, great dialogues, good Cinematography and above all a meaningful ending.
Although the movie is glossy with many action stunts, the director reminds us of SRK’s Baazigar, when one of the brother pushes down the other from the terrace of high-rise building to his death similar to the way SRK pushes down Shilpa Shetty in Baazigar. The first half of Race, kept me glued to my seat, I could not predict easily what exactly will happen in the next scene. With lots of twists and turns, I was munching my popcorn at Rajdhani express speed wondering what is gonna happen next.
Performance wise Akshay Khanna is the best in his negative avatar, Saif Ali Khan (he should take tips on working out from his zero size girlfriend) delivers a power packed performance as an intense elder brother and shrewd businessman, rest all are mediocre. Amongst all the ladies in the movie Bipasha Basu stands out, Katrina Kaif looks strikingly beautiful but fails to strike the right acting chord, Sameera Reddy acts as the Indian version of dumb blonde and provides enough justice to her role. Anil Kapoor provides the comedy element to the movie, but his acts looks monotonous.
Overall the movie is great, can be watched once (once you know the mystery its no more fun), the ladies up the sex quotient and great powerhouse performances by Saif and Akshay. A total paisa vasool movie. Don’t forget to check out the car blast scene in the first half of the movie. I expect Race will recover its investment and break the 30 crore barrier in its first week collections itself. Go Race yourself to the theaters.
My Rating: * * */ 5

A complain has been filed by her driver, Rajesh Shah, in Versova police station on Wednesday evening. He accused Kangana of slapping him while he was driving her for a shoot. Kangana’s sister Rangoli was also accompanying her when the incident took place.
Shah stated in his complaint that the actress was unhappy with the way he was driving for past few months.
The driver also revealed, that the received death threats from Ranaut sisters over the phone after the incident.
When contacted, the police said they were looking into the complaint.
What were these hard-hitting Ranaut sisters doing, when acid was splashed on Rangoli’s (Kangna’s sister) face?
SRK and Irrfan Khan come together for Billo Barber

No, the two hot Khans dont share the same hairstylist. We are talking about upcoming movie produced by SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment, which will have Irrfan Khan playing the main protagonist.
SRK is collaborating with ace director Priyadarshan for a comedy flick titled, ‘ Billo Barber’. Unlike all SRK produced movie, Billo Barber will have SRK in a supporting role and Irrfan Khan is the main hero.
The story for Billo Barber is inspired from the legend of Krishna and Sudama. The film is the story about friendship between a rich actor (SRK) and a poor barber (IK). The duos were langotia yaars in their childhood. But later drift apart only to meet again.
An industry insider reveals, ” Billo Barber is a story based on the relationship between Krishan and his childhood friend Sudama. Priyan is adapting this story of friendship between two friends-in a completely new avatar. Here SRK represents Krishna, he plays an actor. On the other hand Irrfan Khan represents Sudama and plays a village barber. The two are friends from school who grow up and drift until they meet again.”
According to rumors, SRK will be romancing three top actresses-Kareena, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.
Meanwhile the lady opposite Irrfan Khan is yet to be finalized. Priyan is looking for a energetic actress like Samita Patil for the role. Most probably Ameesha Patel or Tabu will clinch the deal.
Lets see the sizzling chemistry between the two hot Khans.
Zero size Kareena Kapoor features in ‘ Vogue’

After the success of Jab We Met, Kareena is the most sought after actress of this year. Bebo has done cover pages of many fashion magazines in last five months. And now the stick thin beauty is the cover girl of ‘ Vogue ‘ India magazine.
For the past one year Kareena is on a strict diet regimen, and working out religiously to cut down all the excess baggage that featured on her body. And now the stick thin bebe is able to fit into zero-size dresses. For the cover shoot of Vogue Kareena slipped into Zero-Size dresses with quite ease.
Now don’t you guys she is going a little overboard with her weight obsession. Beware Kareena, you have become so light that a strong gust of wind can blow you away anytime.
Sonam bags role opposite SRK

Lucky debutante Sonam Kapoor has bagged the role opposite King Khan in the movie.
According to industry sources,” Aditya Chopra was very keen to have a tall, fair Punjabi girl for the role opposite SRK. He has himself written the script and knows exactly what he wants in his heroine. The film deals with the love story of a 40-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl. Adi was also very finicky about signing the right girl because he was making his comeback to direction after a gap of eight years and wanted to get everything just so.”
But Adi was having problems in finding his leading lady, many talent hunts were organized, which lead to nothing. Finally Adi zeroed in Sonam Kapoor, after taking to Anil Kapoor.
The film is going to be released on December 12, 2008, during the Eid-ul-Zuha weekend.
SRK can play the 40-year guy with ease, but what about Sonam? Will she be able to fit the bill of a 16-year-old girl?
Saif Kareena’s Roadside Romeo

An insider from the production house revealed, “It will be a good treat to watch as it has everything – dance, romance, drama. Saif will be the voice of Romeo who is a rich, spoilt but smart dog.
The insider also added, “It will be a good treat to watch as it has everything – dance, romance, drama. Saif will be the voice of Romeo who is a rich, spoilt but smart dog.
The film is about his journey from a rich house to the streets of Mumbai, from five meals a day to leftovers, from soft mattress to stinking garbage. In the process, he falls in love with a female dog (voice over by Kareena).”
The insider also quoted, “The film was earlier slated to release this summer but now it will be releasing in October.”
Well the dog chote nawab is lending his voice over to is similiar to him- rich, spoilt and smart. And same goes for Kareena- Bitch (lovingly called by many these days)
Katrina Kaif : Most expensive item
A Bollywood insider revealed, Katrina Kaif has become a sort of a lucky mascot, after all her films have done well. The actress is now getting any price she is demanding. Shree Ashtavinayak’s Blue has a 100-crore budget. When the production house asked her to do an item number, Kat initially refused, as she doesn’t want the label of an item girl. But when the makers agreed to pay her a 1.5 crore fee and offered a few more scenes, the actress accepted.”
Katrina has said yes to the offer, and has allotted ten day for the song in the month of May.
When contacted, Katrina confirmed the news; I am doing something very special in Blue. I wouldn’t call it an item number. I have given ten days for the film, May onwards. They require seven days for the song. The other bit will take three days.”
Katrina also revealed about her 1.5 crore contract and said, “The figure you’ve quoted is pretty accurate.”
Parag Desai, the media consultant for Shree Ashtavinayak says, “We have indeed signed Katrina for Blue. We would not like to disclose the figures involved. Also, she has a proper role in the film.”
Now that’s a great moolah for Katrina’s jhatkas and matkas.
BAWANDAR (2000)
This week we did not have any box-office releases except for some B-C grade movies. So lets go back in time and have a look at a wonderful and lesser known movie from the year 2000.
BAWANDAR (2000)
Producer: Jagmohan Mundhra
Director: Jagmohan Mundhra
Starring: Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna, Gulshan Grover, Govind Namdeo, Raghuvir Yadav, Lillette Dubay
Bawandar started out with an aspiration by Director Jagmohan Mundhra to make a film based on his homeland Rajasthan. Unfortunately, on his journey for a subject matter, he encountered a sad story from a reporter of a newspaper titled The Guardian. He read from this newspaper the tale of Bhanwari Devi, a worker in a group known as Saathin, who was raped by men of an upper caste.
Nandita Das plays the role of lead role as Sanwari Devi – a lower caste woman. Sanwari is the wife of rickshaw-puller Sohan (Raghuvir Yadav) and a mother to two kids. Sanwari is approached by ‘Saathin’ worker Shobha Devi (Deepti Naval) to take up cudgels against the prevalent system of child marriage. She does so with dynamism and in the course, invites the fury of the villagers.
The upper caste men of the village, the Gurjars and the village priest and do not like this ‘reformist’ attitude and in order to teach her a lesson gang rape her in front of her husband who is also beaten up.
Amy (Laila Rouass) arrives in Rajasthan with her friend-cum-interpreter Ravi (Rahul Khannal) to write about Savri Devi after having read about her case abroad. They rake up the case five years after the incident. Saviti Devi (Nandita Das) belongs to potter’s family of Dabri village. She is married to Sohan (Raghuveer Yadav), a rickshaw-puller in Jaipur, has two children and is a gutsy housewife.
A courageous Savri goes to the police station to file a FIR. The police officer (Ravi Jhanakal), a corrupt man, wants her to produce a medical certificate. Almost after two days with Shobha’s help Savri manages a court order with the help of which she gets the medical certificate in Jaipur. About two days pass in this process. When the case is filed, the upper caste men panic and get the help of the MLA Dhanraj Meena (Govind Namdeo). The case is transferred to the CBI.
In the meantime, a women’s NGO, in Delhi on hearing the incident, tries to help Savri. A Gurjar lawyer (Gulshan Grover) defends Savri but the influence and reach of the upper caste men is high.
The trial realistically takes some time and goes through a number of changes in the process. She is still waiting for justice- and that doesn´t change in the end of the film. Whatever so-called “justice” she achieves during the case, which is the only portion consisting of positive elements in this film, will clearly not benefit her in her endeavors to come.
So is the plight of the real Bhanwari Devi. As expected the judgment went against her. All the accused were let free. It didn’t end there. The judge pronounced some of the most shocking remarks ever heard in a judicial statement.
Bhanwari Devi was a Dalit and so, her rapists – upper caste men – could not have possibly raped her.
Talking on the fact that she was raped before her husband the judge said:
It isn’t possible in Indian culture that a man who has taken a vow to protect his wife, in front of the holy fire, just stands and watches his wife being raped, when only two men almost twice his age are holding him.’ The judgment also states that it is highly improbable that an uncle and his nephews would commit rape together. The presence of one Brahmin amongst those accused leads the judge to observe that gangs in rural areas is not usually multi-caste and so the accused could not have acted together.
Rape not about sex, it is about subjugation. It is a power statement. Especially so, when aligned to it is poverty and caste discrimination, it cannot but create a Bawandar.
Bebo gets richer and richer

Kareena will star alongside John Abraham, in the untitled flick, which will be directed by veteran writer-turned-director Rumi Jaffery.
A close pal of Bebo says, Kareena stands to be one up over Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Till yesterday Ash was the highest paid actress in the film industry. But that does not hold true anymore. Ash gets paid Rs. 3 crore for a film, while Kareena gets a neat Rs.3.5 crore! That makes her the highest paid actress in the industry today.”
Lets see if Kareena will be able to repeat her success story. Then we can decide if she is worth those crores or not.
Kareena: I don’t diet

Folks, you all must know about Kareena’s weight obsession, crash dieting and how she collapsed on Tashan’s set. But the actress has denied being on crash diet, and obsession for size zero figure.
Kareena said, “I am not thin. The media makes me out to be. I don’t diet. One look at me and you know I am quite healthy.”
Despite collapsing and crash dieting, Kareena still manages to make her self glow, we might think the result is because of her relationship with Saif, but the actress retorts, “It is the success of my films that’s making my skin glow.”
I always believed box-office successes makes the actors grow, but in Kareena’s case they are making her glow.
Aamir’s birthday gift to himself

Aamir Khan turned 43 years old yesterday, yes guys it was his birthday yesterday. Aamir made his birthday memorable by an unusual gift he gave himself. The gift that Aamir gave himself is a bald look. Yesterday was the day when Aamir shaved off his hair to get in the skin of his character in his forth-coming film Ghajini.
Aamir Khan, the ace perfectionist has always been known for his zara-hatke movies, and his great performance. He has delivered the finest hits of Bollywood. Recently he proved his directorial mettle too, by making a blockbuster movie like Taare Zameen Par.
He has spent almost 20 years of his life as a Bollywood actor, but he never looks repetitive in any of his roles, he goes to every extent to make his reel-character look as real as possible.
We wish Aamir Khan a great year ahead, and may this 43rd year of his life add all zing, chutzpah and color to his life.
