Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October, 1942, as Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan. He is a Legendary Bollywood actor often remembered as the angry young man of the 1970’s and has appeared in over 180 movies over the years. Apart from being an actor, Amitabh Bachchan is a playback singer, television presenter and film producer.
Amitabh Bachchan made his debut in Bollywood in 1969 as a voice narrator in Bhuvan Shome and after that he landed his first acting role in Saat Hindustani. Though the movie did not do well at the box office, Amitabh Bachchan won his first National Film Award. His major breakthrough was after he played the role of Inspector Vijay Khanna in Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer. Filmfare considered his performance in Zanjeer to be one of the iconic performances of Bollywood history. Zanjeer was a huge success and one of the highest grossing films of that year. He earned his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor for Zanjeer and also the title of ‘Angry Young Man’.
He reprised the role of an Angry Young Man in Deewaar, directed by Yash Chopra. Dewaar again earned him a Filmfare Nomination for Best Actor. Amitabh Bachchan later tried his acting skills in comedies such as Chupke Chupke in 1975 and Amar Akbar Anthony in 1977. It was only after doing movies like Kabhi Kabhi, that Amitabh Bachchan got known for his romantic side.
While filming for Coolie in a University Campus in Bangalore, Amitabh Bachchan suffered a near fatal intestinal injury resulting in a splenic rupture from which he lost a significant amount of blood. After several months Amitabh recovered and began shooting later that year. His character in movie was initially going to die, but seeing that he had a near fatal accident and fought death, the director thought it would not be right to write of Bachchan’s character.
Post Coolie, Amitabh Bachchan’s career went through many ups and down and he did come back with on and off hits like Shahenshah and Mohabbatein. Amitabh Bachan resurrected his career when he started hosting Kaun Bangega Crorepati in 2000 and has since appeared in movies like Baghban, Viruddh, Nishbad, Chheni Kum, etc.
Amitabh Bachan is married to Jaya Bachchan, with whom he acted in numerous movies. The couple have two [kids] [children], actor Abishek Bachchan and daughter Shweta Bachchan-Nanda.
