Is romance back in the reckoning? Looking at the current box-office figures, both trade analysts as well as audiences have swayed in by movies that have dissected the romantic genre perfectly with new storylines, good acting and some refreshing cinematography to accompany it. Romance wasn’t dying in Bollywood but yet it needed a makeover to taste the suit of the contemporary audience and that’s precisely what Bollywood has done when we look at the success of movies like Tanu Weds Manu Returns or even Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, we know that romance has finally managed to make it relevant once again and give masala action flicks a run for their money.
How Romance Became Relevant Again?
If we are honest with ourselves, romantic comedies or tragedies in Bollywood have undergone a massive makeover – no more the story is about the boy meets girl in college or some social function, or some bus-stand and love happens, despite stiff opposition from parents. A bit of dhishoom-dhishoom is thrown in and voila, you’ve had your romance with comic and tragic consequence all served to you like a bhelpuri. But those days are over and even bhelpuris are now concocted as gourmet food so why not romantic comedies as well as tragedies that give the audience the much needed catharsis they desperately need. A movie like Hasee Toh Phasee might not have had box-office success but it had the honesty to re-structure the subject of romance with a delectable ease and such movies are what making romance relevant again.
Upcoming Movies And What Audience Can Expect From Them
There are a string of movies that are in queue to release and that belongs to the genre of romance. In Hamari Adhuri Kahani, romance plays an essential character between the three lead actors. The trailer has rocked social media, which nowadays is a sure-fire indicator of any movie doing well at the box-office. Apart from the likes of Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan as well as Rajkummar Rao the soundtrack is rising up the music charts. With Mohit Suri at the helm and backed by the Bhatt camp, one can be sure that they will never misfire because their success rate is nearly 100 percent when it comes to box-office success. Apparently, Humari Adhuri Kahani is based on a true story and this is what makes the movie worth waiting for. Even Dil Dhadakne Do, Zoya Akhtar’s latest release has a solid romantic premise mixed with the eccentricities of an upscale Punjabi family.
Twist To The Genre
Tanu Weds Manu Returns was a solid take on the blistering patriarchy with the romantic angle spicing up the story. If we look at Ranjhaanaa, we will be surprised at the covert political statement it made. These movies are a far cry from the romantic movies once made and this radical change made it possible for them to become successful. Now, you can’t really give audience anything and expect them to like it. Even masala movies are failing if they have nothing new. So, rom-coms as well as tragedies had to up their tempo to be in the gain. Movies like Break Ke Baad, Ek Main Aur Ek Tu, or even the somewhat lovable Shaadi Keh Side Effects all effortlessly garnered the much twist the genre needed with fresh jodis making way along with the stories.
Actors And Actresses
Actors like Emran Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Madhavan, Imran Khan, Dhanush, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and many others have flourished in the genre – and it could be said – the genre has flourished with them, too. Even the Khans and Kapoors of Bollywood are re-imagining themselves in Romantic roles once again. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini, though an all-out action movie had a brilliant romantic premise. Salman Khan’s Bodyguard was a subtly-done romantic comedy that actually didn’t look like romance. Shah Rukh Khan, the king of romance too might do something similar in his upcoming Fan – something that he has done in countless romantic hits.
Cinema, Script And Cinematography
New Age Bollywood directors along with writer have rejuvenated the romantic comedy genre. Remember Balki’s Cheeni Kum that was a brilliant addition to the genre and was of course one of the movies that can be considered a game-changer. A fun frolicking love story between an aged chef and a young woman, Cheeni Kum paved way for other experimental romantic comedies like Dum Laga Keh Haisa. Directors and writers brought out more innovative characters, characters that were more flesh and blood and audience could easily relate to them. And the box-office success of these movies meant that directors and writers could easily have the courage to introduce more non-generic characters.
What More Can We Expect From The Genre
Humari Adhuri Kahani looks promising. In Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi and Rajkummar Rao, it has the right mix of talent needed to make the film a critical and commercial success. Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Ayo might be the blockbuster that Barjatyas are looking for that might emulate the success of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Romantic movies can be divided into two parts- the regular movies with a frolicking twist on regular premise like Daawat-E-Ishq, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra while movies like Vicky Donor continue to impress with their offbeat romantic tales mixed with social message. Again, movies like Heropanthi, which are basically remakes of Southern movies, have also managed to woo the crowd. Several new movies in this genre are lined up. One of the biggest just might be the Hero remake starring Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Directed by Nikhil Advani, it promises to lead the genre of romance into a new direction in Bollywood.
