Woman centric films too can earn big money in Bollywood

They are smart and sassy, successful and powerful, and today they are walking shoulder to shoulder with men, Well, we are talking about today’s women, and who better than our Bollywood ladies would suit this topic perfectly… At the Oscars this year, Cate Blanchett, who won the Best Actress award for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, in her acceptance speech said, “I want to thank our producers for so bravely and intelligently distributing the film and to the audiences, who went to see it, and perhaps those of us in the industry, who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences. They are not. Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people.” Well, this is so true in Bollywood too. Gone are those days when female centric films were not known to anyone. This year so far, we have already seen a couple of woman centric films like Queen, Gulaab Gang, Mardaani and the soon-to-release Mary Kom. Yes, in these films, our ladies are the heroes. And yes, they have created the right buzz even before their release.

Take a quick look at this years women centric films:

Gulaab Gang The story focuses on the struggle women face in our country. Two top actresses, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Juhi Chawla, star in this film. While Madhuri is the protagonist, Juhi plays the antagonist.

Queen The central character played by Kangana Ranaut, a small-town Indian girl, who decides to go on her honeymoon alone.

Bobby Jasoos Vidya Balan plays a feisty 30-year-old jasoos, who goes on to win a complicated case.

Mardaani sees Rani Mukerji confront the mastermind behind the child trafficking mafia, and bashes everyone who comes in her way, left, right and center.

Mary Kom Biopic with Priyanka Chopra playing boxer Mary Kom. The film is yet to hit theaters but it already looks like a sure shot winner.

In the past too, we have seen blockbuster women oriented films

Kahaani That year, Vidya Balan grabbed all the awards for her stellar performance as a pregnant woman in search of her husband.

English Vinglish And who can forget Sridevi’s comeback film where she plays a housewife lacking proper English speaking skills and is mocked and ridiculed by her own family but later goes on to win everyone’s love and respect.
