If 2013 was Deepika Padukone’s year, 2014 is fast shaping up to be a miraculous year for Alia Bhatt, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. Alia has delivered three impactful films this annum – Highway, 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – and A-list filmmakers are now making a beeline for this petite youngster with the big attitude.
And this includes some of the directors who have created cinematic magic with Deepika Padukone earlier.
Ayan Mukherjee’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was one of Ms Padukone’s biggest triumphs last year. But the blockbuster’s producer Karan Johar has now announced that while Ayan’s next film will retain Ranbir, the female lead has been given to his protagonist Alia.
This couldn’t have gone down very well with Deepika, and now comes buzz that Homi Adjania’s next film will star Alia and Sushant Singh Chauhan. Adjania is the filmmaker who kick-started Deepika’s current winning streak with Cocktail (2012) and collaborated with her again on the soon-to-be-released Finding Fanny.
The exodus of Deepika’s directors towards Alia started with Imtiaz Ali. His Love Aaj Kal (2009) was the film with which Deepika acquired the patina of an actress after being initially dismissed as a glamour doll. Imtiaz went on to cast Alia in the recent Highway and in a strikingly similar fashion, alchemised her image; transforming her from Student of the Year nymphet to sensitive actress.
For now, Imtiaz has come full circle and cast Deepika once again in his forthcoming Ranbir starrer, Tamasha. But Deepika needs to now look frequently behind her shapely shoulders … who knows when the next director slinks off and takes the highway towards Alia’s house.
