Rohit Shetty’s sequel to his 2011 hit, Singham, has not just fetched Ajay Devgn his biggest solo opener ever but it’s also the biggest opener of 2014
Though Rohit Shetty’s Singham Returns received mixed reviews from critics, the audience, especially Ajay Devgn fans lapped up the movie completely. The Independence Day offering from the blockbuster duo Ajay and Rohit – Singham Returns roared at the box office by earning Rs 70 crores plus in the opening weekend.
As expected, the action drama opened with a bumper and staggering figure of Rs 27 crores making it this year’s highest opener surpassing other blockbusters released so far, but on day two (Saturday) the collections dipped to Rs 17 crores. Fortunately, the collections picked up on Sunday with Rs 25 crores which took the overall earnings to a mind-boggling Rs 70 crores plus in the opening weekend. And we are still counting!
The Ajay Devgn-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Singham Returns earning Rs 70 crores plus at the box office isn’t surprising at all; what the makers and trade pundits were anxiously waiting to see was whether the movie would break Ajay’s previous box office records… and yes it did!
Leading exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi informs, “It’s unbelievable; nobody expected the film to open with a bang at the box office on day one. If you consider the weekend collection of Singham Returns, Independence Day being a National holiday, was much bigger than Sunday when films generally do good business. It’s not just Ajay’s biggest opener ever but also this year’s biggest opener. I’m not considering Kick because it was released during the holy month of Ramzan and Eid and not a Friday release.”
Talking about Singham Returns lifetime business, Akshaye says, “I think it would easily cross Rs 100 crore in the next two days at least and lifetime collections should be between Rs 130-140 crores. Today is Janmashtami and being a National holiday, the collections are not great as people prefer to enjoy dahi handi celebrations and aren’t much interested in watching a movie. Let’s see how the movie fares tomorrow.”
Atul Mohan of Complete Cinema suggests, “Singham Returns weekend collection will be bigger than lifetime of Singham. Biggest opener (day one) of 2014, biggest weekend opener of 2014 and biggest opener of Ajay Devgn. Considering his last few releases couldn’t do wonders at the box office, Singham Returns have established Ajay’s supremacy at the box office.”
The figures coming from the most distant corners of the country only show that what has begun with Singham Returns is only a new beginning for Ajay.
