Mary Kom “After watching the film, I cried a lot”

Mary Kom is overwhelmed upon seeing her story unfold on screen in the Omung Kumar-directed biopic on her life. “After watching Mary Kom, the film, I cried a lot,” she says, “because my past came flashing back in front of my eyes.”

The Olympic-medal winning boxer still finds it difficult to accept that a film has been made on her life. She says: “Frankly speaking I never believed Omung sir when he told me that he wants to make a movie on me, I thought he was mad. But later I felt that since sir wants to do so much for me, I should agree. Also, not many people knew me despite winning a championship five times; and through this film he wanted to show and give me (my due) recognition. I am really very happy that he did this for me.”

Priyanka Chopra plays the sports star onscreen and Mary declares: “I am very happy that Omung and Sanjay (Leela Bhansali, the film’s producer) chose the right person — Priyanka Chopra. Everyone knows Priyanka Chopra — from kids to old people.”

The sportswoman admits, “Initially, I was unsure about who would be able to play me in the film since there are many good actresses in the industry. My only concern was that the person should have muscles like me and should be fit and strong. I never thought Priyanka would be able to play my role as well as she has because there was lot of hard work involved. She has made me happy.”
