Akshay Kumar couldn’t stop smiling. His first release of 2014, Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty crossed Rs 100 crore mark his second release, Entertainment has done well in its first weekend. Debutant director duo Sajid Farhad’s debut directorial venture also starring Tamannaah, Krushna Abhishek, Johnny Lever, Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood has earned approximately Rs 36.70 crores in the opening weekend.
As writers, Sajid Farhad had already proved their mettle by delivering six 100 crore blockbusters (Golmaal 3, Singham, Ready, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan and Chennai Express) – and with Entertainment the talented brothers have once again proved that they know the pulse of the audience and are certainly here to stay. The film had a decent start on day one which collected Rs 11.10 crores and day 2 Rs 11.50 crores . But on Sunday the figures went up to Rs 14.10 crores bringing the film’s three day total to Rs 36.70 crores.
Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi informs, “To my surprise, the film has done fabulously well and beyond my expectations. Yesterday, 3 pm afternoon show at my cinema in Raipur was houseful. I believe Friday and Saturday masses came but were not happy with the movie but from Sunday onwards kids started coming in huge numbers that resulted in more footfalls from the family audience. I guess word of mouth helped the film considerably. The music is also a big factor that contributed to the film’s success. Had it not released between Kick and Singham Returns, the film’s earning could’ve been better by 20-25 percent.”
“Considering Akshay’s comedy films like Khiladi 786 and Boss, Entertainment still has done better business at the box office,” adds Rathi. Atul Mohan of Complete Cinema says, “The film had no expectations and it has been an average fare at the box office.”
Akki’s comedy flick released in almost 2800 screens is already nearing Rs 50 crore but will it set a new benchmark?
