Krushna Abhishek: I was quite nervous working with Akshay Kumar

Vidya Balan’s popular dialogue, ‘Main entertainment hoon’ from The Dirty Picture rings true for the talented performer, Krushna Abhishek (Comedy Circus fame), whose name is synonymous with ‘entertainment’. His popular television show, ‘Entertainment’ Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega has not just won him laurels and accolades but got him a new identity as a TV host. Besides that, Krushna is looking forward to his next big Hindi release, Sajid Farhad’s ‘Entertainment’ and also working on a new TV show starting soon. Having struggled for a decade now, Krushna is aiming to do good work with A-list Bollywood actors and create his own identity as a successful actor. In Krushna’s own words, “When good things have to happen, it will happen.” Conversing with Govinda’s nephew was quite an entertaining affair. Read on…

Not many know that Riteish Deshmukh was first offered your role in Entertainment…

Yes, I’m surprised how you know this! Thanks Riteish didn’t do it. Jokes aside I consider myself lucky because if the role went to Riteish first then obviously it’s not going to be anything ordinary. People appreciated my work in Bol Bachchan but Entertainment is going to be better.

Debutant director duo Sajid-Farhad is known for their script narration. How was your experience?

I don’t think anybody else can narrate the story the way Sajid Farhad does. Their narration itself is very entertaining. Entertainment is a simple story but quite appealing to every age group. It’s been a long time we have seen a good entertaining film for kids. And Entertainment is a proper commercial entertainer. It’s for mass and class audience. Kids will just lap it up. It’s a pure family fun film. I know Sajid Farhad for a long time. During their struggling days, they used to visit Chi Chi mama very often and make him listen their compositions. Writing blockbuster films back to back is not an easy task.

Akshay Kumar is known for his comedy timing. How was sharing the screen space with him?

I was quite nervous. Though we had visited Comedy Circus for film promotions earlier, we haven’t performed with each other. And in Entertainment, I was playing his best friend’s role. On the very first day, Sajid Farhad gave me 3 page dialogues and I had to perform with Akshay. I have done comedy earlier but this was with Akshay. I told Akshay that I was nervous and he told me he’s a big fan of me and my standup acts in Comedy Circus. That made me normal. He treated me like his younger brother. On the first day after pack up, I got a little emotional. I hugged him and he smiled at me. I haven’t enjoyed so much working.

What about Entertainment – the dog?

Oh, it was amazing! He was treated like a star and Akshay and I used to slog our asses off standing in heat with no shelter and no fan during breaks. The dog has done a fantastic job. It was quite difficult to make him act but Sajid Farhad made that happen. The kids will laugh, clap and cry watching the film.

Considering you had to struggle a lot, were you disillusioned?

I’ve struggled a lot and did regional films in Gujarati and Bhojpuri languages. But being Govinda’s nephew, people used to acknowledge me and offer me tea and biscuits. My life wasn’t exciting. Govinda didn’t guide me at all. He asked me to struggle, dig the well on my own and drink water. It wasn’t like Aamir Khan helping out Imran Khan. But I’m happy I struggled as I learnt a lot. Fortunately, television happened at the right time and it got me a new lease of life.

So you don’t approach people for work now?

I never approach people for work. Even if Entertainment does well, I won’t do chamchagiri for Akshay. If a filmmaker respects your art and believe you’re an apt choice for the role he will approach you. Similarly, if Yash Raj Films feel I’m apt for a role they will approach me.

Last year you said you’ll do a comedy show like Kapil Sharma?

I’m not interested in standup comedy. Comedy Circus was not standup comedy. It was a skit based show where an actor and a standup comedian used to perform a skit together. Shekhar Suman’s Movers and Shekhar was a standup comedy. Similarly, Oprah Winfrey’s show is not a standup comedy. I don’t want to do standup comedy because I feel standup comedians can’t be perceived as good actors. Shekhar Suman didn’t do well as an actor. Kapil is doing films but I don’t think audience will accept standup comedians as actors. The approach and thinking is different. That’s why I agreed to host Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega and later may host a show like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa otherwise I’ll end up becoming host like Manish Paul. His debut film also didn’t do well and people didn’t accept him as a hero. Sajid Khan didn’t do well as an actor. I’m a dancer and performer. But if I end up doing standup comedy, I’ll be out.

What’s stopping Govinda?

All he needs is a good film. I think Yash Raj Films’ Kill Dill will change his perception. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a good comeback film like how Amitji made his comeback with a powerful role like Narayan Shankar opposite Shah Rukh Khan in a Yash Raj Film. I didn’t like Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and I told Chi Chi mama that he shouldn’t have done the movie. I want him to comeback with a bang.
