Prachi Desai is overwhelmed by the response to her song ‘Awari’ from Ek Villain and is optimistic it will change the course of her career.
Your image was that of a shy little girl. But the ‘Awari’ song from Ek Villain showcases a whole new ‘hot’ side to you.
(Laughs) In my head, I am hot. I just need to show that to people now.
Is that why you decided to showcase your sensuous side on camera for the first time?
I am a versatile actor. I have done very different characters and genres of films right from Rock On to Bol Bachchan to I Me Aur Main. I did the song for Mohit (Suri, the director) as I had to show the people that I could do this too.
Do you agree that you were being typecast and this video will probably change that?
I agree that actors are stereotyped in Bollywood. It works for some actors as they continue to get the same role and survive. But in such a situation, I wonder why I would shoot for another film at all; you might as well use the close-up shots from the previous film. Typecasting can actually kill an actor. I just refused to do the same role over and over again and hence I rejected many offers. This song was liberating for me.
Is this the first item number that came your way?
I got some other offers for item numbers too due to my ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ background. But this song was quite different; it’s quirky. The lyrics are amazing and talks about how a bar dancer could love someone too.
Go on… tell us what made you do this song.
I had never really thought I would do a song like this. I agreed to do it solely because of Mohit Suri. As a director I have immense respect for him. And he makes the women in his films look beautiful. Interestingly, when we spoke about this song he admitted that he can’t do a regular item number because he does not know how to do it. He brought his own signature to the song. Ek Villain is going to enhance his stardom and open him to a new set of audience.
Ek Villain is a Balaji film. How is your equation with Ekta today?
Ekta and I are professionals. We have been cordial. However, in this business we can’t always keep in touch with everybody. But I am sure she wishes the best for me like I do for her.
Are you single or dating someone?
I think I would like to keep you guessing on that.
Finally, does Awari open up new doors for you an actor?
It better do so!
