In conversation with Rajeev Khandelwal

What ‘Samrat & Co.’ is all about?

This is an out and out detective movie. In Hindi film industry, we haven’t explored this genre that much. ‘Samrat & Co.’ revolves around the mysterious world of detectives. It’s full of suspense and thrill. People will be amazed watching it. Emotions are placed not just for the sake of them but as per the script requirement.

How will you describe your role ‘Samrat’?

Samrat is an ordinary person with extra-ordinary views towards his work. His sole aim in life is to decipher unsolved cases, and to uproot crime. It’s the only thing he is fascinated about. If not for solving the cases, his life will be utterly boring. His emotions are on its peak only when he is working on a case. He is eccentric, doesn’t get attached to any one easily, but his mind is very sharp. His body language can be contrasting, it can be calm one moment and bubbling with energy the next! Samrat is highly un-predictable, and I am sure people will find his madness endearing.

How was the experience of working with Madalasa?

I had a wonderful time working with her. She doesn’t have a single artificial bone in her, which is evident in her performance too. Even though she is a newcomer, I never felt like it while shooting. During the one and half month long workshop we did together before the actual shooting has helped us to get the chemistry right. We had a great time during the filming of ‘Samrat & Co.’.

From ‘Kahi Toh Hoga’ TV serial to ‘Samrat & Co.’ how was the overall journey?

Journey has been very fascinating. I feel lucky that I got the opportunity to do some unusual roles. I never had to compromise on anything. Starting from ‘Kahi Toh Hoga’, ‘Left Right Left’, ‘Sach Ka Saamna’, ‘Aamir’, ‘Shaitan’, ‘Table No. 21’ and now ‘Samrat & Co.’ each role had its own charms and challenges which helped me grow as an artist. It’s been 11 years that I am in this industry but still I feel like a newcomer. I have put lot of hard work and there is still more to achieve!

Isn’t it curious that banner known for its family sagas has produced something like ‘Samrat & Co.’?

Rajshri Production defines the true meaning of ‘film makers’ instead of film producers. I knew no matter which ever genre they will capture, they will do the perfect justice to it. This is the first time they are doing a detective movie. So when they came to me with the offer, I grabbed it with both hands as I really wanted to be part of the vital change. After working with RajKumar Barjatya and Kavita Barjatya I realized that movie making is not just a business for them but a true passion.
