Bromance may be a relatively new word introduced, but, it’s not the newest of concepts. The boundaries of bromance can even stretch as far back as to Sholay, cause in the industry where all that’s needed to strike huge at the BO is a winning combination. Over the next few minutes, I’d like to take you through a few couples that have brought to life the meaning of bromance in Bollywood. But, before I do so, I’d like to point out that these couples have stood out because of their simple yet brazen chemistry and now, according to me are bench-mark for “bromance”.
Firstly, I would like to mention, what is probably considered the most iconic friendship in Bollywood ever, Jai-Veeru (Amitabh Bachchan-Dharmendra) in Sholay. This duo has proved to be the flagship of true friendship in all it’s senses. And, this was dramatically shown, right from when they enter riding a motorcycle and singing “Yeh Dosti”, until 3 hours later when Jai dies in Veeru’s arms after he commits the ultimate sacrifice for his friend. The Jai-Veeru bromance stood the test of time and even now is remembered by every Indian.
On a much more casual note, I’d like to draw your attention to Dostana. While this movie addressed a very important problem in modern day society, this also casually showed brazen, homosexual chemistry between John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan. To most people’s suprise, the Indian audience warmed up to the movie, if not the concept and that in itself was a huge leap for bromance in the Indian cinema. And, this is still considered to be the cutest bromance so far. In fact, the movie was so loved that they came back for seconds in form of Dostana 2.
Thirdly, the pair of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham has been seen in one, too many movies now, Desi boyz, Housefull, HOusefull 2, Garam Masala. And, this couple has always been associated with houmor and laughter, so much so that, I smile everytime I think of them. Much like a combination of the eariler mentioned pairs, they have their serious moments and they have their laughs. The chemistry they have built between themselves for over years now, still stands strong and the audience is still left clamouring for the 2 of them to be cast along side each other again.
Fourthly, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor have redefined brotherhood on the silver screen. Ever since the release of Gunday, the duo has wooed their fans with sizzling chemistry both on-screen and off-screen. The Bikram-Bala combination was easily one the most looked forward to combinations in a long time. The Gunday duo showcased a very intense friendship, reminding their audience what true brotherhood and friendship are no matter how circumstances may drive brothers away from each other, at the end of the day, they realize that each other is all they have.
zindagi na milegi dobara
Fifthly and finally, call it a threesome if you will (pun intended), but, to me, this combination truly stands out as, what I consider, the flagship of bromance, which like any normal relationship involves the right balance of fun and disagreements. Hrithik Roshan-Farhan Akhtar-Abhay Deol in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Starting off with a promise of old, interrupted with a skeleton in the closet and softly ending with promises of the future, this movie has everything one needs to know about bromance. The intense moments that are strewn all across the movie never made me lose a second’s interest. Of these, a few that really stick are when Farhan goes to apologize to Hrithik and the whole Laila incident truly take bromance and put it up on a pedestal for all to see.
I’d like to end by saying that, I’m sorry if I have left out any of your favorite bromantic couples.
