The Lunchbox might not have made it to the Oscars with The Good Road taking over, but as it is getting released in one country after another, it is managing to win a lots of hearts from all over the world not to mention making huge collections as well. Lunchbox’s recent response from the US was truly overwhelming.
After a long time that it has been released here in India, the movie got released in three screens in the New York and Los Angeles and in just those screens it managed to make a whopping $51,325 (Rs 31.8 lakh) just on it’s opening weekend! So now, Lunchbox may get screened on a lot more theatres in the US and make a lot more money.
And this is what an American publication Indiewire was found saying about Lunchbox, “This non-Bollywood indie film seemed at Cannes to be a slamdunk Oscar contender, but due to the vagaries of local industry politics another film was submitted, and a film that might have been a prime contender lost its chance. Meantime, SPC pushed ahead and released it on Oscar weekend. The gross itself is encouraging, but the big news is the jump from Friday — yesterday more than doubled the first day’s take, a huge increase, suggesting initial strong word of mouth that could propel this simple story (two ordinary Mumbai residents who enter an unusual romance after their home delivered meals get mixed up) to beyond normal success.”
“An urban fable of hope in the face of disappointment” was what the New York Times said about Lunchbox. While Los Angeles Times had to say, “This warm and affectionate human comedy from India is charming in a delicate and unforced way” about it.
Not just this, Lunchbox also made it big Germany where it collected nearly 10 crores from the country. Looking at all of this, we are now beginning to think if they made a huge mistake by not sending Lunchbox to theOscars!
