Sampat Pal, the leader of the real life Gulaabi Gang (on which Madhuri Dixit’s upcoming film Gulaab Gang is based on) is pissed off with the film. She asserts that the film-makers should have taken permission from her; as she claims the film is based on her life and her group.
“Madhuri ko permission zaroor leni chahiye thi,” she says, “Kisi ki kahani chura lena, yeh naari sashaktikaran ke liye koi achhi baat hai?”
She also added that she has a problem with the protagonist’s name in the film. She says Madhuri’s character should not have been called Rajjo and should have been named Sampat instead. “Bahut achchi kahani banti tab,” she says, emphasizing that a fictitious story based on their group will harm the group’s image.
She added that the documentary based on their group, titled Gulaabi Gang which releases this week in India after being screened at various international film festivals, will create awareness about the gender issues that she fights against.
“Kya public parivartan chahti hai? Yahan pe sabko tamasha sa dekhna achcha lagta hai. Nirbhaya case ke baad Dilli mein uska itna mudda banaya gaya. Election aa rahey thay, isliye. Election ke baad kuch badla kya? Aisi ghatnaye hona band ho gayi kya?” she asks.”Hamare desh mein jo corruption hai woh ashleel filmon aur gaano ki wajah se hi hai,” she says without elaborating any further on that claim.
She also added that people in our country don’t bother much about documentaries; no matter how good they are. “Log documentary ko importance nahi de rahey hain,” she says, “Yahan documentary ko koi tawajjo nahi dete hain. Jo sachchi kahaani hai usko funds bhi nahi milte! Norway mein logon ne usko khoob pasand kiya.”
