In a fresh twist to the Jiah Khan suicide case, her alleged boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi has been cleared of murder charges as the investigation proved that the actress’ death was a suicide. But as per the cops, Sooraj Pancholi will now be tried for abetting her suicide.
“There was no evidence to show that Jiah was killed. We have gone into the material given by her mother but have not found any evidence to support the theory that it was a case of murder,” a top police officer said.
Police had last week filed a 447-page charge sheet in an Andheri court which did not indicate it was a case of murder, based on the evidence gathered during investigation but it accuses Sooraj of abetting Jiah’s suicide.
Her mother Rabiya however, is not convinced that it is a suicide. “They (police) have not done a thorough probe. They have not properly probed the murder angle despite the high court’s direction,” she said.
“We shall move the Bombay High Court next week seeking that the police probe the aspect of Jiah Khan’s murder as they have ignored the material given to them by Rabiya strongly suggesting that her daughter had been killed,” her lawyer, Dinesh Tiwari added.
Earlier, when Rabiya approached an independent forensic expert R N Jerajani, who said that the ligature marks on Jiah’s neck could not have been caused by the soft cloth with which she was hanging. “The possibility of strangulation is not ruled out in this case,” he had said in the forensic report.
Rabiya’s petition also said that the CCTV footage showed Jiah entering her home, wearing a tracksuit minutes before her death but her body was found in a nightgown. “Would a person about to commit suicide change her dress?” Rabiya had wondered in her petition and added that the ceiling fan from which she was hanging was located between two single beds and it was not possible for Jiah to hang herself without a stool, which was nowhere to be found in the house.
