Recently, Abhay Deol sported a black eye at an event. When asked about it, he said it was a form of protest against T-Series’ refusal to pay loyalty to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of his upcoming film One By Two. Now, other influential celebrities like Javed Akhtar and Sajid Ali have also lent him support.
“There are many people who are intimidated by the powerful and hence, sign away their rights. But the fact is that taking away royalty rights is an illegal act, it is a kind of forgery. Royalties are inseparable and what the music companies are asking us to do is akin to committing a crime,” said Akhtar. A birdie tells us that a few years ago, Akhtar was in a similar situation and he demanded music companies to give artistes 50% of the profits.
“Everyone has to stand up and fight for royalty as a united front. I am not talking about any one particular music company here. The issue needs to be tackled at the grassroot level. Often there is no option but to sign the contract as we don’t want our producers to suffer,” added Sajid Ali.
Earlier, Abhay had said “I am against the exploitation of artists. I believe in their rights and even if a musician was ready to sign it, I would advise him/her against it. As a result, I have no album in the market. In fact now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the music company pulls out my promos from the TV channels. I don’t have radio play anyway.”
What will happen now?
