A tribute to the show man of Bollywood: Raj Kapoor

Pyaar hua, ikraar hua hai, pyaar se phir kyun darta hai dil? Yes. The moment I hear Raj Kapoor’s name, that’s the first thing that comes to mind. Pyaar hua, is soldered into my brain and nothing can remove it.

Who was this man? The younger generations knows vert little about him. They mostly know him as Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor’s grandfather. They also know him as the guy who made RK studio. But who was he in reality?

Raj Kapoor was a very hard working actor and was very passionate about his work. He was charming, he was flamboyant and, he was quite the play boy! What has he achieved in his life? Well, he has done some big things. He was and still is the youngest person in Bollywood to start up his very on studio – RK Studios. He has his face on a stamp, he received the Padma Bhushan Award in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987. In his lifetime, he won two National awards, 9 filmfare awards and was nominated twice at the Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d’Or. All this seems like nothing because it’s all so common now. But back in the day, this was a HUGE deal. It was the biggest accomplishment!

For those of you, who don’t know what the Palme d’Or is, let me enlighten you. It is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. Fancy don’t you think? It presented to the director of the best feature film of the official competition. Wow! And to be nominated for it twice? Biggest deal ever!!!

Well, lets go back to the start. How did Raj Kapoor start his career? Yes, he had the golden ticket into Bollywood but the Kapoor family was still so fresh and the concept of movies was so new. So sustaining himself and keeping up the business was again a huge task.

Raj Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood at the tender age of 11 with Inquilab. He got his real break in Bollywood 11 years later, when he was offered the lead role in Neel Kamal opposite Madhubala. Both of them were debuting as the lead and were quite nervous about the outcome. The movie did well in Bollywood. It didn’t do exceptionally well neither did it fail miserably.

Few years later, Raj Kapoor appeared in Andaaz and after the success of Andaaz, there was no looking back for him. He had got everything he wanted. He was a talented actor and he could also direct movies. He eventually started producing movies and soon became the biggest name in Bollywood.

Many years later when everything was done and dusted, Raj Kapoor got asthma and this took a toll on his health. He died 10 days after receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Medicine, doctors, science, prayers, nothing could save him. People all over the world mourned over the loss of a brilliant person. On 2nd of June 1988, Bollywood lost it’s first and only show man.
