Sanjay Dutt’s Parole triggers protests outside jail

Sanjay Dutt, who is serving a 42 month sentence in Pune’s Yerwada Jail, was granted a 30 day furlough in October. He cited health issues and requested the prison authorities to grant him furlough.

Now, he has been granted a parole again. This time, it is a 30 day parole that he acquired stating that his supposedly ill wife Maanyata Dutt needs his care and attention. This act by the government sparked off protests by the Republican Party of India; whose members staged a protest in front of the jail.

The Munnabhai actor was imprisoned in May, to serve the 42 month sentence which was awarded to him because of his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts and for illegal possession of arms.

He stated that his wife Maanyata is ill but she was seen at two separate events in the past few days; healthy as a horse.

Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh said, “The parole application was recommended by an ACP in Mumbai Police and the jail superintendent of Yerawada prison. Considering these recommendations, I have approved Dutt’s parole for 30 days. The reason for seeking leave was his wife’s illness.”

Looks like anything is possible if you are rich and powerful; even jail bunking…
