At the Cannes film festival this year, we were surprised to watch Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat rip her own country apart, calling it “regressive for women” and a “depressing” place to be. What disturbed us was, the 36-year-old actress had the audacity to criticise India, a country that is making waves on the international platform, as far as quality cinema is concerned. Nevertheless, she was slammed by one and all, on her return.
The whole Cannes episode once again reopened at a press conference, recently, when Mallika shut down a reporter for telling her to keep quiet about women’s rights. And for the first time, though I hate to admit, but I liked what she said. Not that I’m in favor of what she spoke about our country on an International platform, I liked the fact that she stood by her statement, and highlighted some great points.
Also, in the end, when a male reporter tells Ms Sherawat to stay calm and not speak from emotion, the first thing that came out of her mouth was, ‘No’. I think she was great, throughout the press conference. There is no reason why Mallika should not have spoken her mind and defend her position and she did so brilliantly.
Meanwhile, I love how she stresses on the point “I’ve done a video with Bruno Mars”. *wink*
