Rajkumar Hirani is a man with a golden touch. Every film that he has made is either a superhit, blockcuster or an all time hit. Woooow! Who can do that? He has directed three films so far and each of them have done exceptionally well. He is every actors dream director. He started as an ad guru, then editing happened and then finally his dream came true and he became a director. Rajkumar Hirani’s films are funny, witty and most importantly family entertainers. The beauty about his direction is that he weaves a social message in each of his films in a very light and sensitive manner.
His first film as a director, came in 2003 and is considered a cult classic. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Gracy Singh, Jimmy Shergill, Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi this film broke all conventional norms set in Bollywood and was a huge hit. Sanjay Dutt plays the role of a local gunda who falls in love with a doctor, played by Gracy Singh. Her father played by Boman Irani is a very tough nut to crack. He doesn’t like Munna and wants him to leave his daughter. He calls Munna’s parents who think their son is a doctor and are ashamed when they learn of his image. This film is hillarious from start to end. This film won a National award and many filmfare awards too. With a debut like Rajkumar Hirani was sure to deliver more hits!
Lage Raho Munnabhai
His second directorial effort was Lage Raho Munnabhai which had a strong cultural impact in India and abroad, popularizing Gandhism under Munna Bhai’s notion of Gandhigiri. The film was generally well received by both critics and the mass audience and was a huge box office success. The was a different star cast except Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. This film saw the unusual pairing of Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan. This film was hugely celebrated and was an extra feather in the directors cap.
Undoubtedly the best of his three films so far, this film was a comedy starring Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani. The film was also very well received by the critics. This film dealt with the double standards of the Indian educational system in the most hilarious manner. Wit and humor is something that Raju Hirani has mastered. 3 Idiots became the second highest grosser in Indian cinema shattering all records across Indian and overseas markets. This film bagged numerous awards including the Filmfare award for best director.
