Dharmendra and Hema Malini’s love story was the most talked about love story of Bollywood at that time. Dharmendra fell in love with Hema Malini during the shoot of Sholay.
If rumours are to be believed, Dharmendra would pay spot boys extra cash and ask them to re-take the scenes between Hema Malini and him so that he could be close to her.
Just like any other couple in love Dharmendra and Hema Malini had their own shares of ups and lows. The first was Dharmendra was already married! To fall in love with a married man or to be called the other women wasn’t a easy job. But they sustained their relationship. Same thing goes for Dharmendra. To have an extra marital affair and to be called unfaithful, disloyal took him on a guilt trip every single day. Their affair was scandalous. Not as scandalous as the Rekha-Amitabh-Jaya affair but close enough.
Dharmendra’s first task was to make Hema Malini fall in love with him which he accomplished with few difficulties. Once they were in love, everything changed and both of them stood by each other’s side.
The next thing on his to-do list was to get a divorce. Yes, he was married with two kids. But his wife, Prakash Kaur was a pretty strong women and had a lot of strength. She remained strong all through the scandal and assumed that Dharmendra wasn’t thinking straight and would come back to his family eventually. But he didn’t and she refused to divorce him. That was her last resort and we commend her for being strong. She had to save her family some how. Dharmendra couldn’t marry Hema until he was divorced and Hema Malini obviously wouldn’t spoil her life and keep having an affair with a married man.
And then like a blessing came this idea. Hinduism didn’t allow for a man to have two wives. But another religion did. Any guesses? Yup! Islam. So to save his relationship with Hema Malini. Both of them converted to Islam and got married and lived happily ever after. And for his wife, she to this day remains his wife and the mother to his daring Deol kids. In a twisted way, everyone is happy in the end.
