Deepika Padukone was in Ahmedabad to promote her upcoming film Ram Leela; which is set in Gujarat. At the airport, instead of fans, she was greeted by protesters who were protesting against the film. The protesters, belonging to the Rajput community, were detained by the police and released later.
Reason for the protest according to the Rajput community is that the movie grossly misrepresents Rajputs. They also filed a public interest litigation against the movie in the Gujarat High Court, seeking a ban against the film in the state.
Apparently, the movie depicts enmity between the Rabari Rajput and Darbar Rajput communities, that has been going on for the last 500 years. In the movie, Deepika Padukone plays a character from the Darbar community and Ranveer Singh plays a character from the Rabari community. This and the incidents depicted in the movie might result in the instigation of fights between the two communities.
This, in its wake, might lead to violent altercations between the two communities, according to the protesters.
The movie releases on November 15.
