2013 saw many movies in Bollywood, 59 to be precise. There were hits, super hits and those lame movies which failed miserably at the Box office. But what’s got our interest is, the status-quo of the highest paid actors in Bollywood. Did that change after the release of Chennai Express?
Last year Aamir Khan’s 3 idiots made 202 crores in 9 days and surprised everyone. People weren’t interested in how much money the movie made but were over whelmed by the plot and kid who suffered alone. Then there was Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger which broke all records and barriers and made a whooping amount of 198 crores in just 6 days of its release. Now that’s what we call fan following! The movie was pure entertainment and the songs were an added bonus. Salman Khan’s much awaited movie, Bodyguard didn’t do super well but still did better than the rest. The movie made 140 crores in 8 days! That’s still better than Aamir Khan’s 3 idiots. Then a lot was expected from Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One. The movie did alright, he made a lot of money but something was off. It wasn’t a typical romantic movie that everyone wanted. So, just like God answers our prayers, Shahrukh Khan and Yash Chopra joined hands to make another crazy romantic movie. They went full on to re-create the magic of Silsila and Veer Zaara. Everyone was so excited until the movie released. The poem Jab Tak Hai Jaan made us all crazy and finally the day arrived and the movie just bombed! The story line wasn’t powerful and was pretty lame at times. But the audience, paid their respect to Yash Chopra by watching the movie. The movie still made it to the 100 crore mark but something again was off.
Then came new year and Prabhu Deva’s ABCD was the first hit movie. There were a lot of expectations from Himmatwala but it bombed at the box office. Then came Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani like a breath of fresh air and for the first time young actors entered the 100 crore club like a boss! Everything was going good and one fine day, Shahrukh Khan released his Chennai Express and oh.my.God!!! Everything changed. It wasn’t a romantic movie, it wasn’t a tragedy nor a movie with a crazy robot. It was a simple movie but it upped all the levels and raised all bars to a crazy extent! As of September, the movie made a crazy amount of 420 crores and left everyone speechless. Everyone who were once gloating about entering the 100 crore club were burning with fury yet smiling on the outside.
Now the real question is. Will this change anything in the Industry? Aamir Khan asks for a ungodly amount if 40 crore for each movie. Sallu bhai asks for anything between 25-27 crores and the humble Khan, Shahrukh asks for anything between 20-25 crores. Will this change their face value or will it also change their fees? Or will Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 give an entirely new perspective to things at hand? We will just have to wait till December!
