Despite getting negative reviews and having a title that has a negative connotation to it, there is nothing Besharam about Besharam. In fact, the protagonist Babli (played by Ranbir Kapoor), is a happy-go-lucky guy.
Citing the character as one of the reasons for casting Ranbir Kapoor, the director Abhinav Kashyap said he likes Ranbir Kapoor’s attitude and his approach to work.
“The film’s message hits bullseye. My character doesn’t fear criticism. He couldn’t care less for appreciation. He does what has to be done. Yeh character sochkar karta nahin, aur karke sochta nahin,” said Ranbir. Contrary to what the title “Besharam” makes people think, Ranbir Kapoor added “It’s not about doing vulgar things or getting nude. It’s about following your instincts and doing what you feel like doing, not what you are forced to do.”
They also ensured the protagonist is someone the audiences can relate to, by giving the character a positive outlook. “All I can say is that a lot of people would relate to, or perhaps, find this character full of life and fun. He has a few endearing qualities, which might make him more acceptable,” Ranbir added.
