The makers of Ranbir Kapoor’s Besharam planned it right and released in the middle of a week when no other movies were being released. They did it to cash in on the public holiday that came in the middle of the week and also to ensure the film faced no competition. In fact, the makers went the whole hog and released the movie in a whopping 3600 screens in the country, making it the biggest Bollywood release ever.
Now, the movie seems to be facing competition from a very unexpected and unusual source. Anil Kapoor’s 24, which is said to be India’s most expensive television series ever. The highly awaited series, which premieres tonight at 10pm on Colors, seems to be a threat of sorts to Besharam.
A top-brass of a multiplex chain in Mumbai says, “We definitely expect a drop in our night-show attendance on Friday and Saturday when Anil Kapoor’s serial is on. 24 has generated tremendous curiosity among youngsters. It looks as slick, chic urbane, thrilling and cool as Farhan Akhtar’s Don and Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger.”
Movie business analyst Taran Adarsh said something on the contrary. “One cannot deny that 24 has generated a lot of curiosity and will definitely have a large viewership. But Besharam and 24 are different media altogether. Though there is a looming threat, they won’t compete with each other,” Taran says.
Ajit Andhare, the COO of Viacom 18 agrees with Taran and says “Being the different properties that they are, I think both will find their audience.”
