Ram Leela, an upcoming movie starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh is under fire in a court in Jaipur. According to the complainant R B Yadav, the movie hurts religious sentiments and it also promotes obscenity.
Ram Leela‘s filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone were booked on a court order in Jaipur for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The complainant thinks that this much awaited movie promotes enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion and also encourages vulgarity.
An FIR has been lodged at the Shyam Nagar police station in Jaipur after the court’s order came on Saturday, September 21. The Ram Leela celebs have been booked under Sections 153(a) (Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion), 292 (Obscenity), 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 298 (Uttering words, etc, with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Ram Leela, which is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is set against a violent backdrop. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on November 15 this year. Controversies surrounding films is not uncommon but no one expected this love story to be dogged by controversy. The trailer doesn’t show the characters making any religious statements nor does it show any ‘obscenity’. We can only wonder why Mr. Yadav filed the complaint…
