A Birthday Tribute to Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor is known for her versatility and her unique style of acting. As per certain media reports, she relies on her instincts and spontaneity as an actor. She is known to commit heavily to each role, and refrains from rehearsing for a project. The actress who turns 33 today, made her debut in the year 2000 in the war-film Refugee. The actress who has won six Filmfare Awards so far, has established herself as one of the leading women in Bollywood.

She was born on September 21st 1980, to Randhir Kapoor and Babita Kapoor. Her name was apparently derived from the book Anna Karenina. She is one of the most critically acclaimed actresses in Bollywood, winning her first Filmfare Award for the Best Debut for her role in the movie Refugee. Her portrayal of the role of Princess Kaurwaki in the epic film Ashoka got her much critical acclaim.

The actress who is known in the Indian media for being publicly outspoken and assertive, and is recognised for her contributions to the film industry through her fashion style and film roles. Her career started taking an upward graph after the movie Chameli, where she plays the role of a prostitute with a heart of gold. This movie was a turning point in her career as her performance was praised a lot by critics and cinegoers alike; additionally, she also won the Filmfare Special Performance Award for this movie.

She later experimented with films, doing a negative role in the movie Fida, to playing an unfaithful wife in the movie Bewafaa. Her performances in these two movies didn’t go down well with the audiences. Nevertheless, she continued experimenting and was seen in a movie 36 China Town with her the-then boyfriend Shahid Kapoor. 36 China Town was a moderate success and the same year, she was seen in a Bollywood adaptation of the tragedy play Othello, by Shakespeare. Her portrayal of the role based on Desdemona in the original play, won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.

Her personal life has been of much talk in the media. She was in a relationship with Shahid Kapoor for a long time. She also paired with him in 4 movies. It was during the shooting of the 4th movie Jab We Met that they broke up. Ironically, that is one of the most successful movies in both their careers and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her iconic portrayal of the character Geet Dhillon. She later started dating Saif Ali Khan who she eventually married in 2012.

She also played the lead in several commercial successes like Kambakkht Ishq and 3 Idiots. 3 Idiots, starring Kareena, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan is the second highest grossing Bollywood film of all time. In the 2012 movie Heroine, she plays the character of a once successful film actress whose career is on the decline. Describing her character as “bipolar and schizophrenic”, Kareena Kapoor said it was the most challenging role of her life. She later appeared in the thriller Talaash: The Answer Lies Within and she was last seen in Prakash Jha’s political drama Satyagraha and will be next seen in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.
