What with the fresh pairing of Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra pulling crowds into theaters, a brilliant idea has struck the mind of Karan Johar. Tired of Abhishek Bachchan’s repeated calls to help him restart his career and with John’s attempts at ‘serious cinema’, Karan Johar has finally decided that its time Dostana made a comeback. Dostana, released in 2008, had starred these two Bollywood hunks along with Priyanka Chopra, who will sadly not be making it this time around.
‘Shuddh Desi Bromance’, the working title for this film, is expected to go on the floors in December. The script, written by Karan, is a ‘deep friendship’ that revolves around a male Bollywood superstar and a superhit male director who think they’re fooling all of Bollywood by saying ‘we are just friends’. Except no one has been fooled. They realize this when the star’s Punjabi wife (possibly played by Kajol) begins to suspect that there is something seriously amiss. The two then have a choice between coming out in the open or pretend to be straight for the rest of their life. Word on the street is betting on the second outcome, because only short filmmakers have the audacity to take an offbeat stand and think they can change public perception through cinema. Amateurs.
In John and Abhishek, Karan Johar has two extremely professional, if slightly unbankable, stars. The budgets are expected to be low because Abhishek will actually be paying the producers to be given a chance to act in this movie. John, who has been venturing into alternative cinema with Vicky Donor and Madras Cafe, believes Shuddh Desi Bromance will be his return to commercial cinema, a genre which he feels he is best suited to.
The film is expected to be released as far away from all religious festivals as possible. After all, who wants to risk a 30 crore plus budget with so many irate religious leaders trying to prove a point?
