There was a time when Bollywood produced relatively less adult comedies like ‘Shaukeen’. Grand Masti is a new age adult comedy. The moderate success of Kya Kool Hai Hum and Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum has prompted Bollywood for more of such movies! Directed by Indra Kumar, Grand Masti features Ritesh Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani in the lead roles. Grand Masti also features new faces like Maryam Zakaria, Karishma Tanna and Manjari Fadnis in important roles.
Grand Masti, needs no introduction. As it’s the sequel to the 2004 hit ‘Masti’. Let’s take you through the first scene of the movie.. College student Amar, Prem and Meet (The Grand Masti Trio) are teaching their juniors how to have a gala time during their college life. So, when they say ‘A stands for’, the camera is focused on the girls back and there are a series of tight close-ups of girls wearing shorts and skirts. As soon as the point is clear, they move to the letter ‘B’ and now the camera focuses on women’s chest. The opening scene sets the trend and makes the audience aware of what’s lined up for the next 2 hours or so. Once out of college, Amar, Prem and Meet are married but are unable to have a good Sex Life. This is when they get a Call from a group called ‘SLUTS'(Shree Lalchand University of Technology and Science) which acts a saviour to their boring and mundane life(So typical Bollywood)! They all get invited to a college reunion where they bump into three hotties whose names are Rose, Mary, Marlowe which of course is pronounced as ‘Roz Meri Maarlo’ for quite a few times during the span of the movie! The Grand Masti trio realise later that they are the Wife, Sister and Daughter of this ridiculously strict principal ‘ Robert Pereira ‘. The movie revolves around this and creates quite a build up, but fails to move forward from there onwards.
Performance wise, Ritesh Deshmukh stands tall and delivers a praise worthy performance! It should be no surprise after consecutive hits like “Housefull 1 &2”, “Dhamaal”, “Double Dhamaal” and many more.. He was the only one who never went overboard and gave justice to the character(No wonder he got the King of Adult-Comedy status). Aftab on the other hand gave a decent performance, barring few scenes where in even Priyanka Chopra’s over-acting seemed bearable! Vivek Oberoi tries his best to get into the character, but is quite lame in a few scenes! Kainaat Arora to Maryam Zakaria to Bruna Abdullah, all three play seductresses with ample body show and also a strip scenes! Manjri Phadnis, Sonalee Kulkarni and Karishma Tanaa fit the bill well and Suresh Nair is good and also the other supporting cast did a decent job.
Indra Kumar tried to pull out a rabbit out of a hat! But failed quite miserably in the attempt! I’m not telling that the direction was terrible, it was decent but the plot of the movie did lack common sense, which is the most important aspect in today’s Bollywood industry. If the plot was a little more interesting and the Jokes( which were mostly for 18+ audience) had a little more variety, the film would have got one and a half star more!
It’s a onetime watch for sure if you like adult-comedy with quite a lot of sleazy scenes! But if you’re looking for some content and decent story line from the movie, you should give it a miss!
