The Russian-born German actress Elena Kazan who had a cameo in Agent Vinod is about to make a full-fledged debut in Bollywood in the movie John Day. Her first Bollywood film itself is a movie that demands serious acting skills as she is playing a chronic alcoholic with a dark past. What is more challenging is the fact that she shares the screen with top-notch actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda.
Kazan grew up in Germany and was educated in the United States. Though she’s a German, she learnt to speak Hindi and Bengali, apart from the many other languages that she is fluent in. It was during this stint in the USA that she was introduced to Indian movies, especially classics by Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. She is also a model and she has done many modelling assignments. She started her acting career by debuting in Bengali cinema with the film “Clerk” in 2010.
When asked about her acting in John Day, she said there was excellent chemistry between Hooda and herself and the complexity of the role was what attracted her. Her role wasn’t just limited to being a chronic drunk as the character she plays has an air of mystery around her and has dark shades and yet that touch of innocence. She is equally intoxicated with love and alcohol. The mysterious aura surrounding the character is what led to Kazan being selected in the first place as she is a new face in the industry.
“I didn’t want someone with any kind of an image,” says the director of JOHN DAY, Ahishor Solomon. “There is certain kind of mystery attached to this character and had I taken a known face, it would have backfired. I must have auditioned more than 30 girls before choosing her because her core persona too has a little bit of edge to her.” John Day produced by K. Asif, Anjum Rizvi and Aatef A Khan.
After this, Kazan will be seen in a movie Prague by Ashish Shukla. Talking about that, she says “”I am a Czech girl who falls in love with an Indian techie (essayed by Chandan Roy Sanyal) who visited her city Prague coming from faraway Kolkata.”
