The multifaceted Anurag Kashyap is known for his much acclaimed, award winning movies which make the viewers think; movies that are (in his own words) much ahead of their time. On his birthday, Bollywood Celebden gives a list of top 5 movies by Anurag Kashyap.

No Smoking

The 2007 neo-noir film is a psychological thriller based on a story Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King. It is about a narcissistic chain smoker who agrees to join a rehab on the behest of his wife. The rehab is an unconventional place run by a Baba where de-addiction is achieved through fear. It has elements of surrealism, horror and dark humor. In the director’s own words, that movie is far ahead of its time. John Abraham plays the chain smoker and the Baba is played by Paresh Rawal.

Black Friday

The critically acclaimed 2004 crime movie set in the early 1990s. It is based on a book Black Friday – The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts, by S. Hussain Zaidi. It is based on the blasts that took place in Mumbai in 1993. It depicts the motives behind the blasts- the tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities after the Babri Masjid incident in December 1992. It shows the efforts of Rakesh Maria (the then DCP of Mumbai Police) in nabbing the perpetrators of the blasts including the chief accused Tiger Memnon. The two roles are played by Kay Kay Menon and Pavan Malhotra respectively.

Gulaal is a 2009 thriller drama set in modern day Rajasthan. It follows the story of Dilip, a mild mannered law student who gets caught in the midst of student politics and a separatist movement headed by a local leader named Dukey Bana. It subtly talks about how the once royals of Rajasthan have now become the present day elite and hold the reins of power in the state. The movie has numerous twists and all the characters are well defined. Abhimanyu Singh won the Stardust award for the Best Breakthrough Performance-Male for his role as an anti-aristocrat Rajput prince in the movie.

Dev D

Dev D is a 2009 movie which is a modern day adaptation of the classic novel Devdas. It follows the story of Dev, an insecure narcissist who’s the spoilt son of a rich businessman. After having a misunderstanding with his childhood sweetheart, he breaks up with her and drowns himself in a life of alcohol. In a drunker stupour, he goes to a prostitute Chanda (who has a dark past). The story goes on with an ending that’s different from the novel. It draws many parallels to real life incidents like the Delhi MMS scandal and the BMW hit and run case.

Gangs of Wasseypur

Gangs of Wasseypur is a 319 minute long magnum opus, released in two parts to make it commercially viable. That movie keeps the viewer in a constant nail-biting frenzy. Based on real life instances, it is the story of two generations of gangsters in the cut-throat world of illegal coal trade in Dhanbad. It was nominated for many awards winning the Best Film (critics) at the 58th Filmfare awards. It is like the The Godfather of Indian cinema.
