Cast : Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill
Director: Apoorva Lakhia
Duration: 2 hours 17 minutes
Keeping up with Bollywood’s latest trend of remaking Hindi classics of the years gone by, director Apoorva Lakhia decides to revisit an Amitabh Bachchan cult movie and make it his own. Only difference being this adaptation isn’t as commanding as the original one.
Unlike the original film which begins with the murder of Vijay Khanna’s parents, the remake starts with a squalid item number ‘Chahe jitni guzaarish kar le’ and though the director had promised that his item girl would take the industry by storm, this one is definitely thanda. To reprise the plot, Zanjeer is a story of a dedicated cop, Vijay Khanna, who wants to bring criminals to their rightful place. Set in Andhra Pradesh, the inital part highlights how dons and ministers have more clout with and within the administration, than an honest Police officer. As a result, Vijay gets transferred 17 times in AP. and in his 18th transfer is assigned Mumbai, this is where the A.C.P takes on an oil mafia don, Teja!
Teja Fails to strike fear, trying to play a terrorising underworld King-pin. Throughout the movie it seemed like the entire Khaki Force except for Vijay is asleep. The climax which is shot against the back drop of Moharram procession , is very interesting!
The cinematography of the movie is not bad. In fact, the camera angles are just right, especially while capturing Ram Charan. But despite that he doesn’t have a strong screen presence. Some dialogues by Priyanka Chopra and Prakash Raj hit the target. But there were few scenes where the dialogues felt quite lame. The songs were forced and one or two less would have worked well to help us stay in our seats instead of restively longing for the interval.
Ram Chara, who is a stubborn Police Officer, excels in action department but lacks the charisma of winning the audience over. Sanjay Dutt was brilliant as ever, the role suited him quite well and we loved watching him act. Priyanka Chopra looked smashing but sometimes it felt as if she was pushing the ‘American Born Desi Girl’ act. Mahie Gill who is the gangster’s lady love looked raunchy and carried it off pretty well. Atul Kulkarni who plays a role of a journalist was note worthy. He too manages to drop in few Power packed one liners!
Of course, the film has a happy Bollywood ending with the triumph of good over evil. In fact, after watching the last scene, it seems as if the makers are hoping to do a sequel to Zanjeer! As if the remake wasn’t enough! Priyanka Chopra fans can enjoy this one for her presence. This movie will atleast keep boredom away if not for anything and is a onetime watch!
