If you still think the 100 crore club is the yardstick to measure Bollywood success, then Shahrukh Khan has just taught the entire Bollywood industry a lesson. Chennai Express, the Deepika Padukone and SRK starrer about a North Indian-South Indian love story, nearly broke apart every Bollywood record on its way to becoming the first Bollywood movie to cross Rs. 400 crore.
The previous all time record was held by ‘3 Idiots’, which had an all time box office collection of Rs. 386 crore in domestic and foreign centers, while Chennai Express crossed Rs. 400 crore in worldwide collections yesterday, 1st September. In India, 3 Idiots garnered Rs. 206 crore while Chennai Express hit Rs. 220 crore. Overseas collections for Chennai Express right now stand at Rs. 112 crore ($17.6 million) while 3 Idiots was around Rs. 118 crore ($25 million), which is still the highest ever record.
The road to grossing Rs. 400 CRORE
Chennai Express opened with Rs. 33 crore and hit the Rs. 100 crore mark by its first weekend. It then went on to hit the following net collection numbers:
Week 1: Rs. 156.7 crore
Week 2: Rs. 43.85 crore
Week 3: Rs. 17.8 crore
Week 4: Rs. 3.8 crore
Total net domestic collections: Rs. 221 crore
Total net overseas collections: Rs. 112 crore
Total net worldwide collection: Rs. 333 crore
Total Gross worldwide collection: Rs. 401 crore
The 3 Khans, Shahrukh, Aamir and Salman literally rule the box office with their top grossers, Chennai Express, 3 Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger. Althoug Chennai Express didn’t go down too well with critics, audiences have lapped up this extremely lighthearted masala movie.
