Not many agreed that this lady with her uber-curvaceous looks would have the world at her feet after just 6 movies in Bollywood. Sonakshi Sinha has become one of the top actresses in the Indian film industry since she first sizzled us with that innocent yet charming role in Dabangg opposite Salman Khan.
Sonakshi Sinha was one of those lucky actresses who made her debut opposite the most entertaining personality in Bollywood, Salman Khan. Not all actresses have successfully maintained their momentum after making their debut with Salman, *coughSnehaUllalcough* but Sonakshi ran with the torch and climbed that hill of fame after featuring opposite top league actors, film after film.
Dabangg has been the highlight of her career so far and the movie did wonders at the box office. The Chulbul Pandey character was a rage among the audience but she managed to squeeze in some spotlight over her innocence as well. She had to go through a lot of criticism at first but the Shatrugan Sinha daughter kept her calm and success soon followed.
She even said in an interview that she is not at all bothered about such talks and is enjoying her work. ”Beyond a point you stop reacting to it. The audience has accepted me… that’s what matters. It’s not like people aren’t coming to me with films. Frankly, I have worked very hard to look the way I look today. I have lost a lot of weight. I still work hard on myself, my films, my skills and that’s paying off. So far, in all the roles that I have played, I am not required to be size zero. I am not a model, I am an actor. I am a regular 25-year-old, happy playing roles that let me be like that. Being fit is a part of this industry and I am quite fit. I don’t fall sick, collapse on the set and faint. I can work for long hours.”
Soon, she was seen opposite Akshay Kumar in Rowdy Rathore. though the movie had mixed reviews, it opened to a great response at the box office and soon grossed over Rs 201 crores worldwide. This proved that she has mettle to star against the top stars of Bollywood and not be overshadowed by their starry image. She was praised heavily for her performance though she was also asked to keep a check on her weight.
Her career graph might have dropped next as she starred in Joker opposite Akshay Kumar and the movie took a beating at the box office. It was criticized for its ‘lame’ plot and though Akshay was the main star of the show, Sonakshi’s performance was way below the standards she had set for herself. But she later claimed that she had no regrets whatsoever in doing Joker.
“I don’t regret doing ‘Joker’. I signed ‘Joker’ after the success of ‘Dabangg’ so it was my second film. For a newcomer like me to get an opportunity to work with Akshay Kumar was like an icing on the cake,” Sonakshi said. “While I was shooting for ‘Joker’, Akshay approached me for ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and that’s how things fell in place. So I am glad I did ‘Joker’,” she added.
Next came Son Of Sardaar which featured Sonakshi Sinha opposite Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt. Some critics gave it a four while some barely rated it two. But the movie somehow managed to do good business at the box office. It saw an opening of around 70% on an average at multiplexes especially in North India. The graph took a deep dive into the Pacific Ocean and had a peaceful profound sleep until she came back with the second installment of Dabangg.
Though she remained in the spotlight for various other endorsements and stuff, she stood up on a professional front when Dabangg 2 stormed into Bollywood with a humongous response. It collected around Rs 251 crores worldwide and holds the record of being the third highest grossing movie after 3 Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger. She again performed really well and got good response from the crowd. The Rajjo character of hers worked magic for her and her career.
She carried her stardom into Lootera and impressed everyone with her versatility. Starring opposite Ranveer Singh, she managed to mark her presence with her pretty looks. The weight issues went far away and we just can’t wait for her upcoming movie Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara.
