Cigarettes were a big NO in Bollywood films, until last year, when the Supreme Court removed the ban, hence permitting filmmakers to use the cancerous stick in their movie scenes. However, they were ordered to display a static message during the particular scene. Here’s a look at our Bollywood actresses who smoked on screen.
Cigarette smoking is a mandatory act in any Madhur Bhandarkar movie. The national award winning actress Priyanka Chopra was seen smoking in Fashion. She carried the cigarette pretty well, showing us the adverse effects of smoking through her character.
The bold and beautiful Vidya Balan held the cancerous stick for the first time in her in the film The Dirty Picture. The actress apparently had to smoke nearly 10 cigarettes to get that one shot right. Post the scene, Vidya had a long bout of cough so much so that she was asked to take a long break. Director Milan Luthria insisted that the actress actually smoke for the sake of authenticity.
Beauty queen Aishwarya Rai smoked the death stick in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish. The posters of the film which had Ash smoking, was asked to be removed immediately as she is considered to be a role model for most youngsters. The doctors at public hospitals even wore black bands as mark of protest.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar shot a promo for his film ‘Heroine’, which showed Kareena unabashedly holding a cigarette in her mouth and an alcohol-filled glass in her hand. However, the images were later blurred by the Censor Board, as in a trailer, there can be no disclaimer about smoking.
Bong beauty Ms Mukherjee, who played a no-nonsense journalist in No One Killed Jessica, lights up the cigarette to get into the skin of her character. Rani had earlier too smoked for her film Bichoo. The actress is a smoker in real life, as well.
