Priyanka Chopra has spoken up against Mallika Sherawat’s recent statement about India and women. Speaking to a magazine at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival in France, Mallika Sherawat had said, “I made a conscious decision to divide my time between Los Angeles and India. So when I enjoy the social freedom in America and go back to India, which is so regressive for women, it’s depressing,”
This didn’t go well with Priyanka Chopra who condemned Mallika’s statement and said that she took offence to it. Priyanka was speaking at the launch of a mobile application by UNICEF, where she said, “I think we are a progressive nation. I disagree that we are a regressive nation. We are all sitting here and talking about educating the girl child, taking our country forward. I think it’s a misrepresentation of what our great nation is on the world platform.”
Priyanka is the brand ambassador of UNICEF. “It was something of which I felt extremely offended by,” Priyanka added. Priyanka called Mallika’s statements misrepresentation of facts and said, “When it comes to Mallika’s statements, I think they were very callous and I don’t agree with her. It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Mallika Sherawat hails from Haryana, which is plagued by dwindling sex ratio. She had made her Bollywood debut in the year 2003, with a movie titled Khwahish. She has also worked in international films such as, Jackie Chan-starrer The Myth. Not very long ago, she was seen in another film, Hiss. Needless to say, we agree with Priyanka here!
